Veterans of America
Who They Are: This organization was founded in 1978 to service the needs of the large group of disenfranchised veterans of the Vietnam War. What They Need: The VVA accepts clothing, books, appliances and most kinds of household items. There are very few things that they will not consider a valuable donation.

It hosts a variety of programs and services including a resource library and nonprofit learning center created to support volunteerism within the US. They currently host a network of 75,000 nonprofit organizations.
What They Need: They are looking for your time, talent and enthusiasm in order to create a more cooperative environment for all people. They also accept monetary donations.

Who They Are: Homeless shelters are community based projects that serve as temporary housing for people in need. Unlike emergency shelters they are consistent staples in the community and are often funded by government grants, community donations or churches. Providing food and shelter for those without, these organizations are generally dependant on volunteer efforts and community involvement in order to maintain their outreach efforts.
What They Need: Individuals to donate money and time to their causes. Shelters, soup kitchens and various temporary housing and relief programs require man power to maintain.

Right about now we all start thinking of resolutions for the New Year. The end of Dec is a very natural time to review the previous 12 months and make some decisions about the future. What was good about the year? What wasn’t so good? What do you want more of this year? What do you want less of?
One of the most underestimated components of a peaceful life is organization. More often than not, if you live in a space that is full of clutter it is hard to see your way to a clear state of mind. And its natural in this busy world to lose track of this kind of organization when there are so many other things in your life competing for your attention. When it comes time to move, many people often say that they are surprised at how much stuff they have. The following are some top tips for getting organized for moving, for storage or just for your life in general.
Everything in its Place– All of your things need a predictable place where they live. The number one reason why people lose track of everyday items is that their whereabouts vary so often. Designate a logical place for each thing, preferably in a space where it is often used so that you don’t have to go to another room to retrieve it. Also, keeping everything in re-usable Tupperware containers makes re-organizing, cleaning around and packing your stuff up all the more streamlined and efficient.
Regular Regrouping– Set a dependable time to put things back where they go. This can happen as often as 10 minutes first thing every morning to perhaps an hour once a week on Saturday. You can have the most amazing system of organization in the world and it will be only a matter of time before it falls apart without regular maintenance. The important part of this is finding a time that is good for you, that will inspire you to feel good about what you are doing.
Keeping it Together– Make sure to keep items of similar use and function together. If you have vitamins that you take every day with your morning coffee, it might make sense to put them in the kitchen near the coffee maker. If you have 3 places in the house where you currently keep batteries, consolidate. Keeping like items together will save hassle and guess work and will also make sure that you know how much of something you have in the house in order to avoid over purchasing.
Resolve to Simplify- This last tip will mean different things to different people. After all the jingle bells have jangled and the chestnuts have been properly roasted on that open fire, you may find yourself surrounded by the decorative aftermath of the holiday season. Not to worry, all you serious decorators, when it comes to clean up its all about the organization. Taking the time to pack up Christmas will not only help to usher in a clean and orderly new year, but it will serve as a preemptive strike against next year’s mayhem of merriment. The following are our top four tips for packing up Christmas.
The Power of Red and Green– Store your holiday cheer in color coded containers. Most multipurpose and container stores sell red and green boxes for storage. Sticking with these colors to designate the location of your favorite snowman collection and other festive bits will save the guess work when you are searching next November. Another good idea is to use seasonal colors for other decorations ie- Black for Halloween, Orange for Thanksgiving and Pale Green for spring decorations.
Original Packaging– The secret to good storage is original packaging. The box that it came in is your friend especially for easily damaged items. The original box is usually created to withstand some form of transport. Breakables such as ornaments, bulbs and lights are obvious package savers as these items are often fine and fragile. Also purchasing durable wreath holders will save them from experiencing the crunch over time.
Make a List & Check it Twice– Next year when you want to pull out your nutcracker place holders without having to look through your 6 Christmas boxes, you will be glad that you took the time to create a detailed list of each boxes contents. Number the boxes and be as detailed on your inventory list as possible. Type your list up and save it somewhere that you will know to look next year such as a file on your computer called “Christmas”.
Box Writing– If you want the contents of each box actually written on the box, use clear wide packing tape. Write each item on the box with permanent marker. This is a great way to make the box re-usable and more importantly re-packable.

The holidays are here. The parties, the presents, the sweets and treats abound. And in the midst of the chaos, we are confronted with the convergence of both full shopping carts and calendars. But the question that emerges during this season is what to get for the person that has everything? How about storage?!
Ok, ok, so storage isn’t the most glamorous gift you can give. It’s certainly not the new espresso maker or gadget that they have had their eye on. It’s not gorgeous and glowing like those earrings she has been hinting about and it’s nothing you can play the latest action video game on. But the gift of storage is actually more than just providing a place to put extra things. It’s an invitation to organization. It’s an escape from the clutter that can so quickly overtake us especially in a season of gift giving and receiving. Think about it; this is the time of year that everyone gets more stuff. And unless we all plan to relocate to larger homes in January, we will have to find a way to implement the new things into our lives and either donate or store the old.
Disorganization of all kinds can lead to frustration and having more possessions than you have space for is a sure way to lose track of the things you actually use on a regular basis. So perhaps this season, you might want to bring in a new year of space for someone: mental, emotional and physical. And the physical bit, well that starts with storage.
I know I’ve never written before and for that I apologize. I want you know that I have enjoyed the contact we have had. You have filled me with so many wonderful things. Your clothes, your shoes and of course all the extra little things that make my existence so full. Even now, I am happy to be hiding those wrapped toys for the kids from “Santa”.
But this year, as you are preparing to take on even more stuff as the holidays go on, I feel it’s a good time to make a request…
I need HELP!
I am seriously overloaded. And frankly, I don’t know how much more I can take. I really think it’s time for some reinforcements. Maybe another closet or garage, or even better yet- you could rent some storage. This would give me the opportunity to have a little space and provide you with what you are looking for a little faster every time. Because in the end, I want you to be happy. And when you come to me and can’t find what you need, I think we both feel badly about it.
I’ve checked with other closets to see if this is something they too have experienced. They have told me what a relief it is when their owners give them more space. The concept of breathing room for us all is not to be taken for granted. I have stuck with you through full times and empty, renovations and reorganizations. But now I’m asking for something back.
