The Best Fabrics to Choose
- Micro-suede: Because it’s not made of real leather, micro-suede is simple to clean. In most cases, a quick wipe will get rid of any stains, and tough stains can be removed with couch cleaner.
- Leather: Leather actually isn’t hard to clean, though it can crack and fade, and it’s also a favorite material of cats (so watch out!). You can simply wipe leather in order to clean it, and it’s hard to stain unless you spill red wine or other liquid that might be absorbed by the porous material.
- Vinyl: Vinyl is really simple to clean (simpler than leather), but it’s not an easy material to find. Plus, some people really just don’t like the look of vinyl, so this one is entirely personal.
The Worst Materials
- Natural fibers: While a cotton couch looks nice, cotton stains easily (so does wool and other natural materials), so beware of a cotton couch if you want the couch to last for a long time.
- Silk: Silk couches look really nice, but silk is a picky material. Not only does silk stain, it also rips easily and you’ll be looking at a shredded couch if your cat decides that she likes silk a lot.
- Leather: Notice how leather is in both categories? That’s because there are different grades of leather, and some are far more porous than others. When you buy a leather couch, ask the salesperson if the leather that you like is more or less susceptible to stains.
Stained Couch Woes

In almost every city, there’s some kind of shelter or other non-profit that would gladly take any kind of couch that’s in somewhat good condition. You can also donate the couch to a group home, or give it to someone that’s really in need.
