When you agree to move with a moving company, you will be assigned a moving specialist. This specialist will assess your moving needs, including the size of your home, the number of items you’re moving, and the distance of the move, to provide an estimate. Once the estimate is agreed upon, you’ll receive an “Order of Service” document outlining the services you’ve requested, the estimated cost, and other details like pickup and delivery dates. If you opt-in to packing services, a team will come on an agreed-upon date before your move and pack up all of your belongings. On the day of the move, the moving crew will come and load everything onto the moving truck. After all your items are loaded, you’ll be given a “Bill of Lading”, which is a legal document that acts as a receipt of your goods and an agreement between you and the mover. It will detail the terms and conditions of the move, the description of your belongings, and the final charges. Each item on the Bill of Lading will be checked off as it is unloaded into your new home. You will finish the move with a walkthrough and confirmation with your driver.

Long-distance moving costs typically range from $2,000 to $7,500, but this can go higher depending on the total weight and mileage of the move.

Most moving companies offer two types of valuation for your belongings. Government regulation requires all movers offer Limited Liability Coverage, which will provide you with 60 cents per pound per item of coverage. Many movers will offer you additional coverage for an additional charge in the form of Full Value Protection, which covers the full repair or replacement of damaged items, or a cash return for the value of the item, at the mover’s discretion.
At Exodus Moving & Storage, we offer both Limited Liability Coverage and Full Value Protection to ensure that you have the option to get the coverage you feel the most comfortable with. You can also declare high value belongings, which are called Items of Extraordinary Value and are defined as items worth more than $100 per pound per item.
