Ways to Retire On the Cheap

If you’re moving to Fort Collins in order to retire, you’ve picked a really good place to do it. Moving to Fort Collins means living in a great city that’s bursting with things to do. But, what if you haven’t saved up a ton of money for retirement?

The first thing that you should know is you’re far from alone. Most Americans do not have a substantial amount of money saved for that rainy day. The second thing to note is that you can retire without a massive nest egg, you just have to do some things a bit differently.

Moving to Fort Collins is a great first step – here are some more that will make retiring easier.

A lot of retirees seek greener and cheaper pastures elsewhere in the world. If you find that affording retired life is hard in the U.S., you may want to think about hiring a long distance moving company (like Exodus!) to help you move to a cheaper part of the world. In many places, life is simply less expensive, and this might be worth looking into.

Move to a cheaper state. If you’re looking to get out of an expensive city, look to those states that are considered less expensive (like Colorado). Other states to consider include New Hampshire, Vermont, and Utah, and Wyoming. The idea here is to find a place where your dollar goes much further, and that includes hiring an affordable long distance moving company.

Cut back on the amount that you owe. This could mean moving to a smaller home with a smaller mortgage, but it also means getting rid of any credit card or other debt. Getting a bank loan with a low interest rate might be a good idea to help you eliminate credit card debt, and simply trying to live a more minimalist life might also help.

Skip buying anything new. Now is not the time to buy a new car or any other big ticket items that will cost a lot. If you need something like a car, try buying a used vehicle. You’ll quickly see that new things really aren’t as important as they seem, and buying used means helping out the environment too through recycling things like clothes and other items.

Think about picking up some contract work. It might not be possible to extend the time that you work at your currrent job, think about ways that you can contract or work for yourself. If you’ve been in a particular business or industry for a number of years, there’s a good chance that you have some solid skills, right? Use those skills to sell your services to other people, or find ways to pick up some side work.

Do things to stay in good health. This may not seem like a “how to live on a budget” retirement tip, but staying healthy means being able to work and live longer. You can’t really extend a career if you aren’t healthy, right? So try to stay in shape by working out, eating right, and being mindful of what you can and can’t do.

When you do move, hire an affordable moving company. If moving to a smaller home or different part of the world is in your plans, make sure that you aren’t paying an arm and a leg for a moving company to help you with that move.
