The Annual ‘Tour De Fat’ – Fun and Adventure for All!

If you are thinking about moving to Fort Collins, there’s something that you should definitely try to get involved in next year: the Tour de Fat. This event if put on by New Belgium Brewing Co. (Fort Collins has more than a few breweries!), and it celebrates trading in cars for bicycles in an effort to help the environment and provides participants with a day of silly fun.

Some Quick Bicycle Facts

Most people in the U.S. still drive to work everyday for a few reasons. Mainly that riding a bicycle through snow and sleet or in bad weather just won’t work if you have to wear a suit. But new numbers released by The League of American Bicyclists show that more people are in fact trading cars for bikes – here’s some more data.

  • Survey participants report making more than 4 billion trips by bicycle during the year 2009 – that number has certainly grown since that last survey.
  • In some of the U.S.’s biggest cities, bicycle commuting rates have increased by a huge 80%.
  • More roadspace throughout the U.S. is being dedicated to cyclists.
  • States like New Hampshire have recently set up laws that provide cyclists with ample room to ride on roadsides in rural areas . Previously there was no designated distance that a car had to drive in relation to a cyclists. The new laws have made cycling in these areas much safer.

So, it’s easy to see why the Tour de Fat is so popular, but there are other reasons too – like beer, food, costumes, a parade, and a great time for all.

The Tour de Fat Details

What can you expect at next year’s Tour de Fat? Beer, parades, costumes at some parades, free beer for cyclists looking to participate in the event, entertainment like bands, musicians, and jugglers, and, of course, food! If this sounds like a chance to grab your bicycle and get a costume well, you’re right. In fact that’s what the Tour de Fat is all about, and it’s one of the most popular events in Fort Collins.

For those that are just moving to Fort Collins, you may not know that Fort Collins is home to both many microbreweries and larger commercial breweries alike. Truly Fort Collins is a beer haven. If you like beer, are interested in learning about beer, or simply want to come and join in the fun, the Tour de Fat is a great way to see what this city is all about. Make sure to bring your bicycle and sign up for next year’s event as soon as you arrive in Fort Collins.

Before You Move Off Campus…

Moving out of a dorm and into an off campus home might seem like the best thing ever – finally, freedom! But, there are a few things to consider before you ditch the single wooden bed, small room, and undesirable roommates. As one of the top Denver moving companies, believe us when we say that there are more than a few things to look out for before you move off campus – take a look!

  • Know your tenant rights. Every city is different, but some landlords will take full advantage of students that have never lived in a rented space before. It’s really up to you to know what your rights are, and what you do and don’t have to put up with. Find out this information before you move.
  • Read the lease carefully. Once you get into a lease agreement, it can be really tough to get out of that agreement. So, make sure to go over the fine print – and keep a copy of your lease on hand, just in case.
  • Take good notes when you move into a space. Pay attention to small details like any kind of obvious or not obvious damage, what is included in the rent (and how it looks when you move in), and what is missing. Later, you may need those documents and photos in order to prove that a place was as you left it.
  • Find out what happens to your deposit. You should get your deposit back when you move out if everything is in good shape when you do so. Make sure that this agreement is in writing.
  • Be certain that the dwelling is safe and secure. Look carefully at locks, door combinations, and other security details. Find out when the chimney was last swept, what kind of fire alarm you have (and if it works), and how much crime is in the building. Sometimes, it’s better to avoid those student filled buildings and move into a place that’s filled more with families or couples – this way, you are targeted by thieves, as students tend to be.
  • Get the phone number and address of your landlord. If you have to send something in writing, you’ll have to send it to a direct address. You may also have to call a landlord when you need help, so do have all of those details on hand. Be wary of any landlord that doesn’t want to give you some kind of contact information.
  • Know what is required of you, and when it is required. Make sure that you pay your bills, it’s that simple. Do not send in rent late, and do not skip payments – though it can be tempting! Make sure that all tenants pull their part, too, since some might skip rent, and this could mess everything up for all people living in a rental apartment.
  • Lastly, find out how you will pay your energy bill – some buildings split this cost between apartments, and this is information that you need to know!

Under The Weather: Moving In Less Than Favorable Conditions

The fall weather is here, and that means more rain, and eventually snow! Some things will become completely ruined if they get wet, so that means money spent in the form of extra packing supplies to protect your stuff.

That’s why relying on Denver moving companies is a smart idea. You don’t need to worry about exposed furniture in the beds of friends’ trucks – the residential moving companies feature enclosed box trucks and trailers to get the job done, protecting your belongings from inclement weather.

But if the moving company in Denver is not moving everything, there might be a box or two that you’ll keep with you, like your ‘Essentials’ box, or a bag containing your laptop. If you’re doing some, or all, of the move by yourself, you’re going to have to learn strategies to make moving in the stormy weather a little easier! Here are some tips to help.

Start At The Finish

Before you start moving into a new place, you’re going to want to begin by protecting surfaces you’ve likely just cleaned. While you won’t be able to stop any messes from being made whatsoever, you can minimize the damage done and reduce the time you’ll have to spend cleaning up after the Denver moving companies and helping hands.

Whether you rely on rugs, towels, or old bed sheets, you need to lay something down on the floor to keep mud and dirt off of the clean floor. If this is a winter move, this will minimize the risk someone will slip on snow tracked in on their boots. Also, be sure you turn up the heat prior to lugging those boxes in – besides keeping the occupants warm and snug while going in and out, certain belongings need to be stored at a certain temperature, like your electronics.

Weatherproof Your Stuff

For your items in boxes, as long as holes are sealed up with packing tape, everything will be just fine. However, you’ll probably be moving some things that shouldn’t get wet, like any artwork, large electronics, or expensive furniture. You can very easily head to your local residential moving company to rent out things to make your move easier – plastic sheeting, mattress pads, etc – or you can employ the use of blankets and tarps you have on hand.

Get Ready To Load Up

If you’ve employed the help of moving company in Denver to load up the big stuff, great! Just be sure you do the same thing you did at the new place – lay towels, sheets, or rugs down to minimize the mess made from wet shoes and boots. Be sure anyone carrying boxes is wearing good slip-proof shoes or boots so no one gets hurt! If you plan on moving some or all of the boxes yourself, you should inspect the area the boxes will be placed for leaks or the presence of water.

Work Smart

If the Denver moving companies are unloading, great! If you don’t have the help of a residential moving company when it comes time to unload, there are ways to make the process less painful in inclement weather. It all starts with the way you pack your truck(s).

Try to be as systematic as possible, packing rooms together instead of all spread out throughout the vehicle. It can be tempting to try to find smaller boxes to fit into gaps, but resist this urge. It is easier to just unload each room in order. You can use the people who’ve come to help you unload as an assembly line of sorts, minimizing the amount of time anyone has to be outside. Not only does this ensure a speedy unpacking process, it also reduces the amount of wet traffic in your home!

You can move in bad weather! Let Exodus Moving & Storage help you so that the weather isn’t even a thought in your mind.

Cleaning Up a Gross Bathroom

Buying an old fixer-upper can really pay off if you find a home with great old bones that just needs a bit of love. But one of the most common trouble spots in an old home is an old bathroom. Some old bathrooms really need a lot of work when it comes to tiling and other trouble spots, and some just need a lot of elbow grease. If you’ve gone through all of the national moving companies, found Exodus, and have just moved into your new home, here are some of the ways that you can clean up that cruddy bathroom space.

The Shower

Okay, let’s be honest, a shower that’s cruddy and dirty looking is the last place that you want to step into to clean yourself, right? So, start with the shower and bath area when you begin to clean your older bathroom. A good trick is to put some vinegar in a plastic bag with a bit of water, tie the bag to the top nozzle of your shower head, leave it overnight, and run the shower in the morning – vinegar is pretty powerful stuff if you let it do its thing.

If you mix vinegar with baking soda, you can use this paste (do not wet it until you are ready to rinse it) on the inside of any shower doors, tubs, or other surfaces. Grab some green scrubbing pads, and get to work covering the inside of your shower with the paste. After scrubbing, your shower should look much better. To prevent future build up, clean any surfaces that are covered by water after a shower, and always leave a window open to let the room air out.

The Floors

Depending on the types of floors in your bathroom, you can either mop the floors with something like vinegar or a strong cleaning agent, or you can simply vacuum the floors. If you find that the caulking around the bathtub and toilet area needs to be redone, strip it and redo it – caulking can collect an amazing amount of dirt, grime, and dust, so it’s best to rip it up and redo it if you don’t like the way it looks (this is an easy project).

The Toilet

Whether or not you should replace the toilet completely is up to you, but a good rule is to consider the stains at the bottom of the bowl. Can those stains be cleaned, or do you have to really remove the entire thing in order to get rid of the stains? Some older toilets will simply be stained beyond scrubbing, and you may want to just replace those. You can use the same vinegar and baking powder paste mixture to clean your toilet space too. Just make sure to get underneath the rims and cover to clean it thoroughly.

The Walls

Older homes tend to have tile walls, and these require tile cleaner to thoroughly clean. Scrub away! You can really transform an older bathroom, too, by getting rid of older fixtures and putting in new options. Some older bathrooms add a lot of style to a home as well, so don’t simply get rid of everything at once. Try and work with what you have by cleaning it the best that you can, and then get rid of those things that you can work with.

Decluttering: Getting Rid of Old Cosmetics

At Exodus Moving and Storage, we want to help you with all aspects of moving from packing and unpacking to getting where you need to go. One part of moving is uncluttering your home before you start packing, and that can mean (for the ladies!) getting rid of some old cosmetics.

If you haven’t gone through your cosmetics in a while, there’s no better time to do so than right before you move – why bother moving a bunch of stuff that you really don’t need anymore, or just isn’t good? After all, the residential moving companies that you are going to call will have one less thing to move if you get rid of some stuff!

Here are some of our best tips for getting rid of old makeup, creams, and other things!

  1. Mascaras and eyeliners that are more than six months old should just be tossed out. You can save one clean brush from a mascara tube for your eyebrows (a really cheap way of repurposing the brush for an eyebrow comb!), but the rest of those tubes should be thrown out.
  2. Lip glosses and liners that are more than one year old should be thrown out. Lipstick is up to you – typically, lipstick that is more than a year old can be thrown out too, but few of us use entire tubes of lipstick that are vivid or for special occasions in one year, so you can hang onto those as long as they are in good shape.
  3. Pressed powder doesn’t last more than two years – if it has started to crack and cake, it’s time to toss it.
  4. Eyeshadow tends to last longer, so you can hang onto this unless you hate the color, and then you should just toss it. (Then why did you buy it in the first place?)
  5. Nail polish will start to separate and look really strange after about a year, so you may want to get rid of any polish when this begins to happen. Take a good look at your nail polish collection, and just get rid of those things that don’t look all that appealing.
  6. Any kind of liquid foundation shouldn’t be kept past three years. If you have some older foundation that you’re still hanging onto, it’s probably going to make your face break out! So, get rid of that liquid foundation if it has surpassed its shelf life (tip: keep foundations in the refrigerator for longer shelf life!).
  7. Sponges: really, don’t keep any sponges for more than a week. After one week, makeup sponges simply start to gather bacteria, and that’s definitely not good for your complexion!
  8. Perfumes: experts say that most perfumes start to lose their scent after one year, but if you’ve spent a lot of money on a perfume bottle, nobody can blame you for keeping it longer than that period of time. Instead, just throw away perfume that no longer smells the same or has lost its scent completely.

When to Toss

We all buy makeup that we never wear. Sometimes its a strange shade that we thought we loved but really didn’t, and sometimes we just never wind up wearing what we bought (because everything looks better in that huge makeup store, right?). Either way, getting rid of any makeup that you just don’t wear makes sense. You don’t have to throw it away if you have someone to give it to (would your friend, sister, or mother like those things that you no longer like?), or you can simply put it in the recycling.

Taking the time to go through all of your cosmetics is a really good way to clean up your makeup bag before you move, and this way you will have less to move (and more room to add stuff to your bag!). While we can’t help you with makeup, we can help you when it comes to moving boxes, packing, unpacking, and even storage. Exodus Moving and Storage is one of the top residential moving companies with storage space in both Fort Collins and Denver that you can rent and use, so give Exodus Moving and Storage a call today.

Top 5 Reasons Your Pending Sale Fell Through

It is one of the most frustrating things in the world. You’ve walked through the home of your dreams, decided you had to make an offer, and filled out all of the paperwork with your bank. As you sit and think about what color to paint the kitchen and contact Denver moving companies, it happens – the realtor calls you with the bad news your deal fell through.

There are a variety of reasons that this scenario can turn into a reality – some of these reasons are preventable, others are not. Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons, so that you can be prepared, requiring the services of a moving company in Denver a whole lot sooner.

Can’t Obtain the Loan

If you skipped the pre-qualification process, you might want to reconsider that first step. There are times when the mortgage just won’t go through – maybe it’s your credit score, or just a few negative entries on your credit report. If it’s the later, this is fixable, but takes time to show up on your credit report. You should take the time to review your credit and correct any problems ahead of time, so that nothing stands in your way of obtaining the financing you need.

In some cases, debts that you are carrying, even if you are paying on them faithfully each month, can work against you. If you’ve recently purchased a car or obtained financing for a big-ticket item like a computer or refrigerator, your lender might be a bit hesitant to add to your debts.

In both of these cases, you can either work to pay down the debts, or you can offer up a larger down payment on the mortgage. This will mean a lower loan amount, which will work in your favor towards financing the home of your dreams, allowing you to move in sooner with the help of Denver moving companies.

Buyer’s/Seller’s Remorse

This can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons. Some people find a better house to suit their needs, or closer to their workplace. Others just realize it is going to cost them more money, and they get cold feet. Some just get scared at the enormity and finality of the decision altogether, or research the neighborhood and find it isn’t as desirable as once originally thought.

Sellers can experience the same hesitancy, and can change their mind at any time. Maybe moving is going to put them further into debt because the appraisal wasn’t favorable, or they just cannot imagine parting with a house that holds so much history to their family. Whatever the reason, it happens, and sometimes can’t be avoided.

When you are the buyer, the best way to combat this is to arm yourself with knowledge. Not just about the house in question and the surrounding community, but knowledge of your financial situation and needs. Why are you moving in the first place? Does the house suit your needs? Don’t find yourself making an offer and then retracting it as quickly as you submitted it, losing out on a deposit paid to a residential moving company.

A Bad Inspection

When a licensed home inspector conducts a walk-through, they might find an electrical (or other) issue that the homeowner refuses to fix. This can lead to the buyer retracting their offer. Of course, it isn’t limited to just electrical issues – the roof, heating system, drainage, and plumbing are amongst other issues that an inspector checks for. If the needed repairs can’t be negotiated into the contract, the bank will deny the mortgage, simple as that. Sometimes, there is a structural issue, in which case no negotiations can be made whatsoever. The bank will simply deny the mortgage on the spot.

Low Appraisal

It’s common practice to receive a loan up to the appraised value of the home. If you aren’t able to come up with the difference, or the seller isn’t willing to negotiate a lower price, the loan will be denied, no Denver moving company required.

Pending Sale on Your Current Home

This applies to those whose contract is contingent upon the sale of your current home, which happens to be the majority of those seeking to get a new mortgage. You just can’t afford two mortgages, so why would the bank agree to let you obtain a mortgage when you haven’t gotten rid of the other one? You can look into a bridge loan to help out in this situation, or if you are a new homebuyer who hasn’t even listed your old home yet, you can go for a home-equity line of credit.

In this way, you are extending your loan, with the collateral being the equity on your home. You can get that moving company in Denver to lug your stuff to your new home while the old one is on the market!

If you are careful, you can avoid any potential snags popping up during the approval process. Just take a look at your financial situation, and be sure the home you are making an offer on is worth what the owner is asking. Contact us today, we would love to be your residential moving company when the deal goes through!

6 Mistakes When Hiring A Moving Company And How To Avoid Them

The key to making sure that a move goes smoothly is preparation. While saving a buck on Denver moving companies is important, there are things that you can’t afford to skimp on. Here’s a look at some common moving mistakes people make when hiring a moving company.

  1. Moving at the wrong time. It’s not uncommon for moving companies to charge more during peak seasons. That moving company in Denver you’re looking at may be charging more during the last week of August than if you were to request a quote for the second week in January. People aren’t as likely to plan a move in the dead of winter, so rates will be a bit lower than that busy back-to-college period at the end of the summer. If you can stand to wait a week or two, you may find that it saves you a bundle!
  2. Waiting until the last minute. This might not seem like a big deal, but think about it – the more time you have to research and plan, the more likely you’ll be getting the best deal from Denver moving companies. If you wait until the last possible minute, there will be more pressure to simply make a choice for the sake of hiring someone to do the job, and then you’ll find out that you went with a less reputable and professional company. Further, contacting residential moving companies early on in the relocation process ensures there isn’t a detail that you aren’t thinking about. There may be something that the moving company knows that you don’t, and bringing it up at the last minute changes everything for the worse. Be sure you are preparing well in advance to spare yourself from any surprises.
  3. Choosing the wrong neighborhood. One very big mistake when relocating is making a hasty decision on where to live without checking out the actual area. Take your time and do your research – there are numerous places on the internet you can turn to in order to research crime rates and school district health, and you won’t wind up stuck in a neighborhood that’s less than desirable.
  4. Going with the lowest residential moving company estimate. Sure, you want to save as much money as possible during your move, that makes sense, but going with the cheapest company you find could turn into a case of “you get what you pay for.” Is it worth saving money when your grandmother’s heirloom china arrives cracked and broken? Be sure you are getting estimates for the exact services the Denver moving companies are offering (packing, unpacking, materials, etc) and that they are reputable and highly professional.
  5. Accepting the quote from the movers over the phone. If a moving company gives you an estimate over the phone, you’ll probably want to call elsewhere! How can they give a reliable quote when they haven’t seen the scope of the move? You should always get someone to walk through your home, pointing out every single thing that will be moved, which items are breakable, and which items you plan on moving yourself. It is important to mention that you need to show them every single thing that needs to be packed and moved – otherwise, you’ll see that your estimate is lower than the final charges, but only because you weren’t explicit enough prior to moving day. Spare yourself from surprise charges, and don’t leave anything out.
  6. Read the fine print. You’d be surprised how many people will sign a document blindly. When it comes to your belongings and your money, be sure you read through the agreement between you and the moving company so that you know exactly what you’re getting into. If there is a clause in the agreement that you aren’t comfortable with or don’t understand, ask. Wording could possibly be changed to keep you at ease, and if not, don’t be afraid to call the deal off and head elsewhere.

Call us today to get a quote. Exodus Moving & Storage is happy to protect your belongings and help you through the relocation process to make it as painless as possible!

Need Help Remodeling? Pick an App!

Sweeten Screenshot - Exodus

Sweeten Screenshot – Exodus

While you are in the process of moving to Fort Collins, one  of the things that you may have to do is remodel the home you are moving into. Whether you’ve found a house or an apartment, moving to Fort Collins often means setting things up in your new place the way that you want them. This process can be tricky and time consuming, but some new home improvement apps are looking to change the way that you remodel or make over your home.

The New Apps

A Reuters report indicates that Americans spent nearly $130 billion in home remodeling projects last year alone. That means there’s a huge market for people that are moving to Fort Collins, or elsewhere, and want to change the way that things are inside of their home before the big move. It also means that Americans spend time and money remodeling an existing home. There are many reasons why remodeling is a good idea, but finding the right expert to install a washer or dryer or to fix the concrete around an outdoor area can be hard.

There’s a new app called Sweeten that aims to make this process simpler by connecting homeowners and renters with professionals like contractors and designers. People that use the Sweeten app (currently available in New York City, but expanding all over the United States soon) can post photos of a home improvement project, and Sweeten will find the right expert for the project.

In order to ensure that the right professionals are on the job, the company behind Sweeten monitors every project, and makes sure that all projects are completely well and on time. Homeowners that use Sweeten can leave feedback about a specific professional, so that others know how the project went.

Additional Home Improvement Apps

Sweeten is the newest home improvement app, but it’s far from the only one. Home improvement  apps make it a lot simpler to find what you need for your home, find a professional, or simply get ideas about things that you can do to make your home or apartment better. It’s also a good idea to look at websites like Apartment Therapy if you are considering moving into an apartment, and you need ideas on how to make that place better or just different.

While moving to a new home used to mean getting renovation recommendations from family members and friends (and that can still work, though it’s good to have some other opinions!), finding what you need for a new place is easier than ever thanks to the world of technology. Most people don’t think of app when they think of home improvement, though there are many apps that can help you with everything from finding a contractor to measuring spaces (yes, there’s an app for that too!).

So, the next time that you are searching for residential moving companies and getting ready to move, think about turning to technology instead of looking for information elsewhere.

How to Clean Your Oven

When you move into a new apartment, the hope is that you will have all new appliances that are clean and look great. But that’s often far from being the actual case. More often than not, landlords try and find the cheapest appliance option, and that can mean an oven that’s far from being clean. The other possibility is that you may move into a place where the last renters weren’t the cleanest folks, and that might mean that you now have a very dirty oven to work with.

If you need some help cleaning up your oven, here are some of our best tips – take it from a Denver moving company with a lot of experience, we’ve seen a lot of really dirty ovens!

How to Get Rid of the Gunk

You can buy oven cleaner that’s full of really toxic chemicals, but there are other ways to go about cleaning the gunk out of an oven.

  1. Make a thick rub of baking soda and water.
  2. Slather the rub all over the inside of your oven, and let this sit overnight.
  3. The next morning, remove all of the rub with a scrubbing sponge or dry towel.
  4. Use a wet towel to get rid of the excess baking soda scrub.
  5. Fill a spray bottle with vinegar.
  6. Spray the vinegar inside of your oven, and wipe that off with some paper towels.

After this process, you should have a completely clean oven.

The Oven Racks

As far as the racks go, these will need special treatment, and you have two good options.

Option 1: you can put your oven racks in your dishwasher, and start the cycle. If your dishwasher can accommodate the racks, you should have clean oven racks in no time.

Option 2: you can soak your racks in your bathtub by adding some dishwashing liquid to your tub, letting the racks soak, and then scrubbing the racks after a good soak.

Both methods should leave you with cleaner oven racks, and this will mean a cleaner oven all around.

Denver Moving Company Cleaning Tip

We’ve helped people move into all kinds of apartments in many different areas, so we’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. Many people that move into an apartment are often discouraged by the state of the appliances in the apartment, but you can really get things into good shape by using the right cleaning products and some elbow grease. Even the oldest oven can look somewhat new after soaking and cleaning. If you love the place that you want to move into, but hate the look of the appliances, keep in mind that you can always clean up any stove or dishwasher or other appliance that’s in the new place.

In most states, landlords have to provide appliances that are in working order, but that doesn’t mean those things have to be new or in great shape, so do keep that in mind when haggling for a new stove. In the meantime, though, you can make your stove look like new by following the tips above.

Getting to Your New Spot

Once you have found the perfect new place, give us a call, and we’ll help you get there quickly. Moving With Kids: Making It Easier On The Little People

Moving is stressful. There’s the process of finding and closing on a new house or leasing a new apartment, selling your old home or giving notice to your landlord, selecting the perfect option from a long list of Denver moving companies, and packing up your belongings, just to name a few. What will you keep? What can you get rid of?

If you have children, this complicates things a bit. Sure, you need to think about the situation at your new home a bit more – is there enough room for all of you, and is there adequate space to play outside or a playground in the vicinity? What are the schools like? Before the moving company in Denver loads even a single box on that truck, you need to look at every single way this is going to impact your little (and not so little) ones so that you can ease their anxieties and meet their needs.

In order to avoid listening to incessant “I hate you, you ruined my life” comments, here’s a list of things to think about before Denver moving companies are selected.

Can You Stay Where You Are?

Obviously, I’m talking about the city here, and not your actual residence. Do you need to relocate due to a new job? Then you probably can’t remain in the city your child has come to know and love their whole life. If you’re just looking for a new house, do you need to look outside of town? Staying in the same vicinity keeps your child in the same school and near the same group of friends they have acquired over their short life, which removes the anxiety that goes along with starting in a new school and starting from scratch.

Can It Wait?

If it isn’t job related, there are times when you might want to wait on contacting residential moving companies for a bit. If you’ve just gone through a divorce or a loved one close to your child has recently passed away, you might want to wait just a little bit. They need a chance to work through their grief before they start over in a new location. In times of emotional stress, the last thing they need is to watch Denver moving companies hauling their stuff from the home that is comfortable and stable to an unknown world. Give them some time to heal, and introduce the idea slowly.

Make Them Feel Important

Sometimes, all it takes to make a child feel better about moving is to involve them in the decision-making processes. Make them feel like they have some say, and take their opinions seriously when deciding on a home, a moving company in Denver, and even what items you plan to get rid of when packing day comes along. The more involved your child is, the higher the chances they will look forward to the move.

It’s important to remember that your child’s feelings are important. While you know this move is in the best interest of the entire family, your child probably doesn’t see it that way. Listen to their feelings, and try to put yourself in their shoes before you respond in a negative fashion. Remember that the issues they are worried about are really important to them.

Are you moving to another country, or to the other side of the United States? Turn to the Internet to show them all of the exciting things this new area has to offer. Let them look at the community, things to do there, the website of the new school they’ll be attending, attractions, museums – anything that will pique their interest and make them look forward to the new move. Is there a club they would consider cool at their new school, like Lego Club? Look for opportunities and experiences they don’t currently have available to them to change their opinion from negative to positive.

Toddlers: Special Considerations

They say there’s no reasoning with a toddler. This is very true! You might notice that they are excited about the prospect of moving, until you actually move. They realize they are in a scary new room, in a scary new house, and their world is falling apart. You’ll likely notice tantrums, episodes of acting out, and all sorts of unruly behavior once the move is complete. Because of this, try to keep other changes to a minimum – don’t do things like transition them to a bed from a crib or potty train during this period. Keep as much as you can the same as it was in the old house, just until they adjust to the new place.

Once You’re There

Make setting up your child’s room your first priority, although you’d probably rather be unpacking the kitchen! Place the furniture, fill the drawers, and let your child decide where important toys and books will go. What’s more, don’t get so wrapped up in the move you toss schedules out the window. They are more important than ever now!

Be sure your child meets with teachers and tours their new school before their first day. This is important to making them comfortable before being in front of a new set of peers.

If you need to, find a child therapist in the area to work out any anxieties or unresolved hostilities that remain.

While a move is tough on kids, the majority are resilient and bounce back quickly, realizing their fears were unfounded. They’ll see that it isn’t so bad after all!
