Ever wonder which state is the most popular moving destination? How about the state people move from the most? Even if this information doesn’t influence your moving plans at all, it can be interesting to see how your state fares in terms of moving statistics!
Luckily for you, United Van Lines compiles this data each year, looking at where customers are coming from, and where they’re moving to, since 1977. How did your state fare? Are any on this list a destination you’ve worked with a Denver moving company to bring your stuff to?
It seems Oregon is the most desirable location to those who already live there – 66 percent of moves conducted during 2014 were those moving elsewhere in the state. They held the top spot in 2013 as well, with a 5 percent increase this year. North Carolina came in at number two, while South Carolina came in third.
Washington, D.C. Was number 7, a drop from their number 4 position last year. Other states making the top ten include Oklahoma, Idaho, and Vermont. Colorado just missed the top 10 list, falling at number 11.
It seems the Northeast is experiencing an exodus of sorts – New Jersey tops the list of states people are moving from, followed by New York and Connecticut. Are they all relying on national moving companies to escape the extreme winters?
The company conducted a separate survey, showing that the Northeast had the highest rate of retirees relocating to different states, most of them going west. One in three retirees headed west. The rest headed south, presumably seeking warmer climates and more predictable weather.
There were a few states that had about the same number come in from other states as relocated within the state, including New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Wyoming. There’s something to be said about a state people don’t want to leave!
If they aren’t retiring there (29 percent of survey respondents), they’re better able to find a job, according to the survey. Employment is abundant, with many new opportunities being made available for job seekers. In fact, 55 percent of people surveyed said they chose Oregon for a new job, or their company had transferred them there.
Some are doing it because the Oregon housing market is much more affordable than that of other states (the survey points to California as a popular state people are coming to Oregon from, since their cost of living is much higher.) When you can save money and easily find employment, what’s better than that?
The rest of those choosing Oregon do so for the lifestyle. It has a healthy, vibrant economy, and the state features the most green space protections and things to do outside. People are moving away from high cost-of-living states to Oregon to save a little green, and heading outside to enjoy all the green space the state has to offer!
It isn’t the state’s schools – their system was ranked 41st in the country by Education Week. It is here where Colorado shines, coming in 21st in the country. Whatever the reason, it seems that going west, to Oregon or Colorado, is a great move if you’re looking for a better quality of life. You just can’t beat the mountains, with gorgeous views and outdoor activities aplenty, fresh air, and wildlife. And remember that these statistics are based on business that moving company conducted, not a national list of all moves conducted by all moving companies.

There are a lot of things to think about while preparing for a move. Some of those things may not ever leave your mind, and this can result in many sleepless nights! An overactive mind is something that you can eventually tame, but it will take some know-how to quiet your mind down enough to actually sleep through the night.
As movers in Boulder CO, the Exodus team knows a thing or two about moving, and how to get enough sleep during a move. Here are some helpful tips to assist you with getting that needed sleep every day, so that you can prepare for your move with a clear and rested head.
The Trick to Napping
If you can’t quiet down your mind at first, you may feel exhausted during the daytime. A good way to get the energy you need to go all day long is to stop during the day and take a nap. But, there are tricks to napping. If you nap incorrectly, you may even find that you are more tired than you were when you started, and that defeats the purpose, right? Instead of winding up feeling awful after a nap (which happens to most people), keep these tips in mind.
- Trick yourself into falling asleep right away by sleeping on a bed pillow or putting something else around you that reminds you of nighttime sleep.
- Set your alarm clock for 20 minutes, and do not go over this time no matter how tired you are. Why? If you wake up during the deep stage of sleep, you will feel extremely fatigued. The trick is to wake up before you reach that stage, and that usually happens between 20-30 minutes. You may have to experiment with an alarm clock at first, but you’ll get the hang of it.
- Allow yourself to take the time out to nap. A lot of people feel guilty about napping, but you’ll wake feeling more refreshed than you did when you went to sleep. As a result, you will be more productive, and you will also think clearer. So, really, you should only feel guilty about not taking a nap!
Calming Your Mind at Night
Numerous studies have shown that playing with a phone or tablet before bedtime will keep you awake longer. The colors and screen intensity of a tablet or phone stimulate your brain, and this means that you will not sleep right away. So, the best way to begin sleeping properly is to ban any kind of device from your bedroom. Also, follow these tips:
- Try and do something calming before bed like meditate or go through a special bedtime routine.
- Use calming scents like lavender to soothe your body and mind.
- Try taking a hot bath before bed, and then jumping right into bed.
- Make sure that your room is completely dark, and that no light is allowed to enter into the room.
- If it helps, wear an eye mask or listen to white noise while you sleep.
It can be difficult to calm your mind when there are so many things to think about, that’s for sure, but you can learn to sleep during stressful times if you make the effort to focus on your sleep cycles. Try napping correctly, getting into a bedtime routine, and letting those thoughts that are in your mind move in and out without dwelling on any one thing. It will also help if you have a team of moving professionals to help you out with every aspect of your move — there will be a lot less things to think about!

Mover in Boulder CO know that this town gets a lot of snow, so it’s the perfect place to move to if you love that fluffy stuff! But what about the rest of the world? Where are the places on the globe that receive the most snowfall? If you love to ski, snowboard, or just like the idea of a white town during the winter, here are some of the snowiest places on earth (mostly the US)!
- Mount Washington, New Hampshire: There are a lot of great reasons to move to New Hampshire including no sales tax, a lower cost of living, and Mount Washington — one of the snowiest places on the globe. In some spots on the mountain, around 80 feet of snow piles yearly. You can’t live on Mount Washington, but you can live near it!
- Nagano, Japan: If you move to Japan’s Nagaon area, you can enjoy plenty of snowfall regularly. This is one of the snowiest spots on the globe, and it’s also one of the prettiest.
- Alta, Utah: Alta is a popular ski area for good reason — this spot is covered in steep and thick snow most of the year, and it’s the best place to go if you want to ski.
- Fargo, North Dakota: By January, Fargo is usually buried underneath 12 feet of snow, and this town is known for being one of the snowiest around. If you really love the snow, Fargo might be your ultimate destination.
- Denver, Colorado: If you’ve moving to Denver, you’re in for a snowy treat! Denver gets an average of 53-inches of snow each year, not too shabby!
- Fort Collins, Colorado: Moving to Fort Collins? Even better! Fort Collins gets an average of 54-inches of snow each year, so it’s just slightly higher where snowfall is concerned than Denver.
- Minneapolis, Minnesota: With 55-inches of snowfall each year, Minnesota beats both Denver and Fort Collins where snowfall is concerned. Not sure where to move? Why not check out snowy Minnesota if you love the white stuff?
- Provo, Utah: Utah doesn’t have a shortage of snow, and Provo is one of the snowiest towns in the state with an average of 57-inches of snowfall per year.

You may have come across a Boulder moving company or two advertising White Glove Service. If you’re wondering what this kind of service involves, or whether or not you need it, we’ve taken a few moments to break down the service as much as possible, so that you can decide if white glove is for you.
National moving companies may vary when it comes to what white glove service includes, but typically the following services can be expected:
- The removal and installation of furniture in addition to moving each piece to your new location
- Packing and unpacking of boxes
- Exact placement of furniture after assembly
- Expert movers available from doorstep to doorstep
The Point of White Glove Service
When it comes to white glove, there really shouldn’t be anything that you need movers to do that isn’t already taken care of. The point of this type of service is to make sure that your moving needs are met from A to Z, so that all you have to do is start living in your new spot. White glove isn’t necessarily for everyone that has to move, but it does come in handy in some situations.
When to Use White Glove
Anyone can opt for this kind of service, but the following reasons to use white service are particularly helpful.
- If you are moving valuable antiques
- If you have items that are very heavy and very hard to move in, out, or around your house
- If you need help assembling any items
- If you aren’t sure how to arrange furniture in your new home (some white glove movers can also offer you decorating advice, but this depends on the company you hire).
The other reason to consider white glove service is if you are moving an office space, and you do not have the time to connect all electronics, set up furniture, and move everything. White glove service can really save when it comes to your time, which is always the most valuable thing during any move!

The holidays are fast approaching, which goes hand in hand with something else here in Colorado: winter weather. The snow, the ice, the frigid temperatures – either you love it or you hate it. There is plenty to do outside in the winter, but it’s not for everyone. Some prefer snuggling up by the fire, hot cocoa in hand, watching the flakes fall where it is warm and cozy.
There aren’t many, if any, people that will tell you the thing they love doing most in the winter is hiring a Boulder moving company and moving. It’s the reason the winter is a slow season for national moving companies in general. Economically, moving in the winter is the best decision you could make! If you must pack up and move in the middle of the winter, here are some tips so that you don’t lose your mind.
Winter weather can often mean slippery conditions. Whether snow or ice, one tiny mistake can lead to a big fall. Before Parker movers show up to load up your belongings on the truck, be sure you spend time making the driveway, side walk, and entry to your home clear of snow and ice. It’s definitely something the movers will appreciate, and so will you. For those stubborn areas of ice you just can’t seem to break up, you’ll want to turn to salt or other ice melting products. Give the product an ample amount of time to break up that stubborn ice, and apply more if the ice doesn’t melt quickly.
Are you going it alone, sans movers? Not only will keeping walks clear of snow and ice help you immensely, so will making sure your vehicle is up to par when it comes to handling the slippery conditions. You’re going to be driving with a heavy load, which actually works in your favor, weighing down the back of the truck or van. However, if there are hills along your route, you’ll want to ensure you have a great set of snow tires along with chains, a shovel, and some sand or kitty litter just in case. Kitty litter? What’s that good for, anyway? Well, if you get stuck, sprinkling a bit of kitty litter on the slippery patch just in front of or behind your tire can give you the traction you need to get unstuck!
Look to the pros.
Most people feel downright depressed thinking about the fact they have to move in the middle of the winter. That’s why choosing a Boulder moving company is the perfect decision. The pros are used to the challenges winter weather can bring to a move. If you decide to go it alone and rent a moving truck, you risk serious injury.
Even if you make it through the packing of the truck unscathed, now you have to negotiate this big rental moving truck through unfamiliar neighborhoods in the snow. If you think it’s tough to pull your sedan out of a slide, imagine doing that with a box truck! Your professional moving company is seasoned pros when it comes to driving that truck in any weather.
We’ve mentioned the all-important ‘Essentials Box’ a time or two here on the blog. In case you didn’t know, the Essentials Box is the last box to get packed up and put on the truck, full of many things you will need first in your new home (think toilet paper, nails and tacks, cleaning supplies, etc.) In the winter, you should also be sure you load up the shovels, salt, and other snow removal essentials last. This way, when you get to your new home, you can be sure the walkways are safe to carry boxes across.
Be conscious of what you’re packing in the truck.
Certain things just won’t make it to your destination in frigid temps. Things like glass bottles full of liquid might freeze and break, especially if this is a long distance move. Be sure that those items susceptible to colder temps are packed up in your temperature-controlled car to avoid any damage. Wrap your electronics with blankets as well to ensure they survive the move just fine. Allow these items to come to room temperature before using them.
Before you chose your new home, you spent a lot of time researching – the neighborhood, the schools, things to do, property taxes – so why would your move be any different? Be sure to watch the weather forecast, being prepared to change plans if a big storm is predicted. If changing plans just isn’t in the cards, don’t sweat it – your moving company can handle it. Just be sure to monitor walkway conditions and keep it as clear as possible for them.
While moving is tough any time of year, it is especially so in the winter. Follow these tips to ensure the entire process is as smooth and painless as possible.
Moving to a new place means leaving almost everything behind. Sites like Facebook can help you stay in touch with people from your old town, but getting into a new social scene can be tough. Whether you’re moving to Boulder or any other place, there are some good ways that you can begin building new friendships – give any one of these tactics a shot, just in case you’re worried about what to do on a Friday night.
The Job Plan
If you’re moving for a new job, making friends will be somewhat easier than if you’re a freelancer or moving for another reason. Start talking with your new coworkers, don’t skip those 5-7 happy hours, and make plans with people on the weekends. Hopefully, some of those people will introduce you to other people, and you can begin expanding your network.
The Meetup Spot
Sites like Meetup.com are filled with groups of people with like-minded interests. Find a group that looks appealing to you (based on what you like to do), and join the group for meetups. You may just find one or two really good friends in that group of people.
The Religion Route
Getting involved in community events is simpler if you have a church or other religious meeting spot to go to. As soon as you arrive, introduce yourself to church members, and explain that you are new in town. Before you know it, you will have bake sales and other events to attend throughout the week.
The Fun Way
There were probably a few things that you loved to do in your old town, right? Find those same activities in your new town, sign up, and get involved. As soon as you make your presence known, you will find a whole new group of people that you can become friends with.
Taking First Steps
There are other people out there just like you waiting for new friends to come along too. Connect with those people by asking them to hang out on a weekend, or find out what they like to do in their spare time. Sometimes, meeting new people requires making the first move, so you may have to be the one that does all the inviting. Don’t be shy, and reach out to others in order to make friends. As soon as you start to join groups and meet people, you will have more friends than you can handle!
Hiring National Moving Companies
You can work with national moving companies, or you can find a moving company in Colorado to work with. No matter where you are moving, Exodus Moving and Storage is here to make that transition simpler. In addition to offering full service moving options, we also have storage spaces in both Denver and Fort Collins for you to select from. If you can’t move some of your old things into your new place, just rent a storage space!
Moving to a new town might feel a bit lonely at first, but you can beat those blues by meeting some new and interesting people. Get out there, join some groups, make some new friends, and get into the mix of things. Colorado towns are open and welcoming, and you and your skills are needed and wanted in a number of different places! Since your experiences can help others, we also want to know: how did you make new friends when you moved?
Share your ideas with others on our Facebook page, or let us know what we can do to help you with your move. You can also call us for a free estimate!
It happens. You’re at the gym in your new town, you strike up a conversation with a guy because he’s nice, and you realize that he isn’t looking for friendship (and you’re not looking for a relationship). How can you put that guy in the friend zone without crushing him? Here are some ways to set very clear boundaries.
Step 1: Try and ignore his advances as much as possible. If you see him again, smile and nod, but pop in your headphones to avoid a longer conversation.
Step 2: Bring up the man in your life right now. If you’ve just moved to a new place, you may not have a guy in your life, but you may want a friend. Telling your new guy friend that you are already taken is one way to avoid any awkwardness. If you’re going to use this tactic, make sure to bring up your guy as soon as possible.
Step 3: Turn down any invitations to hang out. If he asks you what you are doing Friday night, simply respond that you have plans.
Step 4: Skip any kind of close embrace, holding hands, or other kind of contact. If you do hang out with the guy you met at the gym for coffee or for lunch, do not get too close to him physically. You can listen to his problems without hugging or touching him.
Step 5: Just be honest. Some guys get really offended when you tell them flat out that you aren’t interested, but you can do this nicely. Just tell him that you’d love to get some new friends, but you are into dating anyone right now. Hopefully, you’ll keep the friend and get rid of any notion of moving the relationship to the next level.
When Moving to a New Town
Whether you’re moving to Fort Collins CO or anywhere else, you’ll need some friends to help you make that transition a smooth one. Some of those friends are bound to be guys, and there’s nothing wrong with having a few guy friends. Realize, though, that sometimes turning down a guy means losing him completely, so that’s a risk that you will take (but a necessary one if you’re just not that into him).
If you are moving to Windsor or another place, one other great way to make it clear that you don’t have feelings for your new guy friend is to invite other friends out whenever you two decide to go somewhere. If your girlfriends are around (or any new friends that you meet), you may even be able to set him up with another girl. It can be hard to let a guy down if he’s really into you, but it’s the best thing to do to avoid leading him on. Otherwise, things could get really awkward!

Buying an old fixer-upper can really pay off if you find a home with great old bones that just needs a bit of love. But one of the most common trouble spots in an old home is an old bathroom. Some old bathrooms really need a lot of work when it comes to tiling and other trouble spots, and some just need a lot of elbow grease. If you’ve gone through all of the national moving companies, found Exodus, and have just moved into your new home, here are some of the ways that you can clean up that cruddy bathroom space.
Okay, let’s be honest, a shower that’s cruddy and dirty looking is the last place that you want to step into to clean yourself, right? So, start with the shower and bath area when you begin to clean your older bathroom. A good trick is to put some vinegar in a plastic bag with a bit of water, tie the bag to the top nozzle of your shower head, leave it overnight, and run the shower in the morning – vinegar is pretty powerful stuff if you let it do its thing.
If you mix vinegar with baking soda, you can use this paste (do not wet it until you are ready to rinse it) on the inside of any shower doors, tubs, or other surfaces. Grab some green scrubbing pads, and get to work covering the inside of your shower with the paste. After scrubbing, your shower should look much better. To prevent future build up, clean any surfaces that are covered by water after a shower, and always leave a window open to let the room air out.
Depending on the types of floors in your bathroom, you can either mop the floors with something like vinegar or a strong cleaning agent, or you can simply vacuum the floors. If you find that the caulking around the bathtub and toilet area needs to be redone, strip it and redo it – caulking can collect an amazing amount of dirt, grime, and dust, so it’s best to rip it up and redo it if you don’t like the way it looks (this is an easy project).
Whether or not you should replace the toilet completely is up to you, but a good rule is to consider the stains at the bottom of the bowl. Can those stains be cleaned, or do you have to really remove the entire thing in order to get rid of the stains? Some older toilets will simply be stained beyond scrubbing, and you may want to just replace those. You can use the same vinegar and baking powder paste mixture to clean your toilet space too. Just make sure to get underneath the rims and cover to clean it thoroughly.
Older homes tend to have tile walls, and these require tile cleaner to thoroughly clean. Scrub away! You can really transform an older bathroom, too, by getting rid of older fixtures and putting in new options. Some older bathrooms add a lot of style to a home as well, so don’t simply get rid of everything at once. Try and work with what you have by cleaning it the best that you can, and then get rid of those things that you can work with.
National Moving Companies
Exodus is a Colorado moving company, but we can move you anywhere you want to go. We’re also happy to provide you with information about our Colorado moving company before you move, so feel free to call us if you have any questions about our Colorado moving company.
Fort Collins movers see a lot of different homes when we move people to or from a place. Some homes are clean and sparkling, and other homes need a bit of love. If you’re moving into a home that needs a thorough cleaning, don’t panic! You can follow this basic cleaning checklist to make sure that you’ve covered all of your cleaning bases.
- Declutter: at the end of the day or week, every home has a few things that are just out of place. Those could be shoes, clothes, papers, bags, and other things that have just been left in the wrong room or wrong place as the busy week flew by. So, the first thing to do when cleaning a home is to get rid of that clutter by putting everything back in its place. When moving, those things might include going through boxes to unpack things, or simply moving boxes to the right rooms.
- Learn to toss: sometimes, you may pick up an item or unpack an item and think to yourself, “What am I doing with this?” If that’s the case, throw it out. In some cases, you just have to get rid of the stuff that you no longer need.
- Start dusting: there’s little point to dusting before Fort Collins movers bring in all your boxes, since all of that unpacking will just cause more dust. But, after your Fort Collins movers have gone, you can start to dust the place top to bottom. Use dusting product for surfaces, glass cleaner for any glass area, and special dusting products for anything delicate like computers or televisions.
- Vacuum: using your vacuum, clean up all floors and rugs, and make sure to use the attachment to clean sofas, underneath beds, on top of certain areas, and across all other surfaces.
- Give your wooden furniture some oil love: after a move, wooden furniture or other items like pianos might need some oil. Using a special oil, rub down those surfaces to make sure that they don’t crack or split.
- Window screens: if the home you are moving into has window screens that aren’t yet on the windows, this is the perfect time to wipe down those screens or vacuum up any cobwebs.
- Kitchen: industrial kitchens are cleaned with a bucket of hot water and some diluted bleach, and you can do the same thing in your kitchen. Just fill your sink with the bleach and water mix, and dip a rag into the water. Clean all surfaces with the bleach water, and allow your rags to soak in a new mixture of bleach to clean them thoroughly.
- Laundry: chances are that you have quite a bit of laundry now that you’ve moved, and it’s best to get that going while you are cleaning the rest of the home. By the time you’re done cleaning, your laundry will be done as well, and this is an ideal way to multi-task.

The amount of national moving companies who exist within the United States is actually a fair number. You believe that it would be all that large considering that distance is a pretty big factor to undertake. Especially with the prices of gasoline and other fuels these days. However, many companies still exist that like to move people long distances and help them to settle into their new places.
It feels like these days one of the largest hassles of being a long distance moving company is undertaking the costs associated with doing so. Particularly underneath the fuel section. Gasoline these days is insanely expensive and isn’t likely to drop anytime soon. Sure, during the winter it’s probably going to drop about a dollar nationwide, but that’s not a big deal considering that you are still paying $2.50 a gallon. It wasn’t that long ago when gas was just over a dollar 50, and even a dollar at some points. It’s crazy to think about how much it is gone up and how much it is affected businesses like long distance moving companies. Considering if gas prices were even remotely close to what they used to be, people would do so much more traveling over the road it’s ridiculous. Moving companies that move nationally would be much more prevalent and it wouldn’t really be limited to those who had the funding to be able to afford to drive a vehicle over such long distances.
Oh well, I guess such as a way of life as things move on. Expenses increase and the amount of money being made is supposed to do the same, even though we all know that’s not true. Moving companies have taken one of the largest hits when it comes to looking at fuel prices, but they are the only ones. They are simply an example of one that has a lot of experience and understanding fuel prices and what kind of an affect it has.
