Avoiding Moving-Related Injuries

There are many great reasons you should choose to hire a Colorado moving company to help you with your move. It’s much less of a hassle when you don’t have to wrangle up all of your friends with trucks, or drive the rental moving van you aren’t entirely comfortable being behind the wheel of. Some people would just rather not worry about the logistics involved with getting their belongings from point A to point B. Others rely on the moving company to deal with every aspect of the move, including packing of the boxes, in order to wash their hands of the moving chores everyone detests.

If money is tight, you might be tempted to do it all on your own. It might be a pain, but it’s doable. However, it’s not about what vehicle you’re moving those boxes and furniture in, but more a question about how you’re lifting them. Even the most in-shape person can tweak a muscle just right, knocking them out of commission for weeks.

Here’s a list of tips for those not relying on Denver movers, doing all of the heavy lifting yourself, so that you don’t end up sidelined with a move-related injury.

  • Lift with your legs. You’ve probably heard this a few times in your lifetime, and for good reason – your spine and the muscles that help them do the lifting really shouldn’t be bearing the brunt of the weight. In order to keep your back happy and as pain-free as possible, bend your knees deeply and use your leg muscles when you are lifting heavy objects, keeping your spine as straight as you can.
  • Engage your abs. So the only six-pack you have is waiting in the fridge for when you are done moving, but that doesn’t mean your abs aren’t important! No matter what your midsection looks like, you should be engaging those all-important core muscles whenever you are lifting something, heavy or not. Just like lifting with your legs, engaging the most muscles as you can will help lighten the load for your back muscles and spine.
  • Hold them close. Your body is an effective machine for moving, but only when used properly. When you lift a box or heavy item, holding the item as closely as possible to your body is the best way to ensure you avoid injury. Keep your feet apart, spread in a wide stance. This will help your spine and neck.
  • Don’t push it. You probably have a pretty good idea of your capabilities in terms of lifting things. However, for some reason, certain people get it in their heads they are Superman/Superwoman, and can all of a sudden heft heavy items like a champ despite not normally being capable of such feats. When you try to move objects that you know full well you shouldn’t be lifting on your own, you increase the chances of injuring yourself dramatically. Get help – whether from family members, friends, neighbors, or even full service moving companies. Better safe than sorry! And just because you can lift heavy boxes on your own doesn’t mean you should be moving furniture on your own. No matter how strong you are, the size of certain items dictates you acquire help, or leave it to the experts.
  • Comprise a game plan. Once your stuff is all moved in to your new home, it’s time to start placing furniture and unpacking those heavy boxes. If you need to relocate certain items to different areas of the house, be sure to think about where exactly the item is going to end up before you lift. The less time you are lugging these heavy items, the less your chances for being injured.

Strangest Places To Live

As movers in Boulder CO, we’ve heard of some strange places that people live. We’ve also scoured the Internet to compile a list of odd cities and places that you may find bizarre, but some people are happy to call home. If you’re in the mood for a new town, or a new home, take a look at these top strangest places to live — and call us if you need long distance moving company help.

Miyake-Jima, Japan: Miyake-Jima is a small island in Japan that’s complete with water, sunshine, and all of those things that make an island great — there’s just one caveat. This island is literally toxic. The volcano that sits on the island spews sulphuric gas that’s toxic most of the time. Residents are required to wear gas masks, and to carry those masks everyday. So, why would someone live there? Because the Japanese Government pays people a monthly stipend to live, survive, and record information about the island. Creepy!

Kowloon Walled City: Kowloon isn’t far from Hong Kong in China, but it couldn’t be more unique. This walled city looks like something from the set of a horror or sci-fi movie, but people actually lived inside of the city until some 30 years ago. Kowloon was a lawless land inhabited by outsiders that didn’t want to obey laws. After a while of letting the people of Kowloon live inside of the city, the Chinese Government finally tore it down, and forced all of the outlaws to move.

Lily Dale Assembly: In upstate New York is a community of mediums, healers, and those that talk to the dead. The town of Lily Dale is where you want to go for a reading or workshop on anything spiritual or past-life related. Right now, there are more than 200 inhabitants, but thousands pass through this town regularly.

Slab City, California: This is an old abandoned Marine base that’s actually turned into a city of sorts. The people that live in Slab City state that it is the “last free place on earth,” and there are no rules or laws in the city. In Slab City, there are no sewers, toilets, or any other town amenities (no running water either), but plenty of RVs and people looking to live completely off the grid.

Coober Pedy, Australia: At first glance, you might not see anything when you try to find this town. That’s because Coober Pedy is actually underground. Residents live in caves and inside of dug outs in this part of the Australian Outback. Why? Most people went to Coober Pedy in search of Opals, and wound up living underneath the ground because living about the ground was so hard to do due to harsh living conditions.

Chefchaouen: This Moroccan town was painted a pale blue (against white walls) by Jewish settlers that came to the town in the 1930s. The town is aglow in a blue haze, and it’s a popular tourist spot because of the blue hue.

Colma, CA: There are more graves and gravesites in Colma than there are living residents, but that doesn’t bother the 1800 or so people that live in the town.

How to Choose a Doctor

When you move, you have to change everything from where you will actually live to the primary care physician you have. While many people simply choose one doctor and stay with that doctor regardless of bedside manner or other details, you should know that you can shop around for a family doctor – and this is really an important step.

Just as anyone else that you may work with regularly (like a dentist or even a therapist), a doctor has to be a good fit for you. So, if you’ve moving to Highlands Ranch or anywhere else in the world, take a look at these tips for finding the perfect doctor before you settle.

  • Go with the right person for the job. Not all doctors are created equal, and some doctors are simply family physicians while others are general doctors or internal doctors. What’s the difference? Typically, family doctors focus on you and your entire family, and can do things like send you to specialists when needed. General doctors are kind of like family doctors, but general doctors can treat anyone of any age, and sometimes have specialties. Internal medicine doctors help with chronic diseases including the prevention and treatment of these diseases.
  • Find one that works with your insurance plan. Insurance companies work with different doctors and hospitals are discounted rates in order to provide clients with doctors that are called “in plan” doctors. Selecting one of these will help you keep bills down, and you can find the in-plan doctors in your area by calling your insurance company and asking for a list.
  • Make sure that you feel at ease with your doctor. When you’re moving to Highlands Ranch, you’ll want to find a doctor that you feel comfortable with. Chances are that this person will know your medical history inside and out, and that they will be the one you tell whenever you are facing a problem or medical concern. It’s important to really trust your doctor, so keep this in mind.
  • Find someone that you can easily get to. If you are moving to Highlands ranch for work purposes, you may want to find a doctor near your office. Sometimes, a doctor that’s near to your home is a good idea too, but being able to pop in and out of your doctor’s office while you are at work is never a bad thing. Sometimes you may be able to skip out of work early to visit with your doctor that’s right down the street.
  • Staff matters: it’s hard to deal with an aggressive or angry secretary every time you call your doctor’s office, so you may want to find a different doctor if your doctor’s staff is less than kind.

Be Picky

A good family or general doctor will be with you for life, so choose one that you can count on to be there when you need them. Plus, building a solid relationship with your doctor means feeling more comfortable about telling that person everything that is wrong with you physically. Find a doctor that you like, and you’ll feel a lot better about taking care of your body!

Full Service Moving Companies Are Like Full-Service Gas Stations

There is something oddly awesome about full service moving companies that you don’t get to see very often. They are interesting mostly in the fact that not many moving companies actually offer the services of their employees. Well, not at least any of the main ones that you can think of. When you say moving company, the majority of people will think about U-Haul. This isn’t necessarily wrong because U-Haul has branded itself to be one of the premier self serve moving companies in the United States.

They’ve done a very good job of it to. However, moving your entire home as a single person is really not a viable option. What goes from a very daunting job, quickly turns into something that is impossible because you cannot lift heavy objects like couches, or even beds without another person. It comes in handy to have a few people there with you, which is why furniture movers who have the ability to assist you in the moving are so valuable. One thing that may concern you though is how they handle very fragile things.

It’s understandable that you would feel this way because you probably have a sentimental attachment to the item. Think about it this way though, they wouldn’t be in the moving business if they did not take precautions to ensure that your belongings reach their destination safe and sound.  Hopefully this will help put your mind a bit at ease so that you can give them a call and not have to move those really heavy or fragile objects by yourself. Plus, the company that you get is invaluable. You may gain a little bit of knowledge from what they have learned over the years of moving.

If nothing else, think about full service moving companies as full-service gas stations. They technically going the same respect. For anyone who has ever seen a full service gas station, you know how handy it is to go to. Not only that, but it’s kind of fun to watch someone else do the work that you should be doing. The same thing applies here, though you still have to help move. I’m sorry, but you probably can’t just sit on the couch and watch them move all your stuff out. They may resent you a bit for it, unless you have some sort of extenuating circumstance.

The Most Important Thing to Know About Furniture Movers

There are quite a few businesses who consider themselves to be furniture movers. People who specify themselves as movers of large objects, particularly things that are heavy. If there’s one thing that you should know about people who specialize themselves in heavy lifting and moving like this, it’s that not all heavy movers are created equal.

Full service moving companies, or furniture movers as some people refer to them, are companies who understand the dynamics of carrying heavy objects and want to do this strenuous task for you. Yes, we are one of these people, but not all of us are created equal. Some movers don’t have the understanding that goes along with moving tricky objects.

Let’s take couches for example. Couches are one of the most difficult things to move not only because of their weight, but because they possess legs usually on the bottom that are not removable. These legs, and short as they may be, can still get caught on a lot of things and get damaged in the move. Not only that, but if the movers do not have the proper methods of moving the couch, it can actually cause injury. If you’re going to move a large couch and a small apartment and it happens that the department has a very small corridor as well in order to move it, it’s likely that they will get caught considering how small it is.

So, before you hire a moving company who considers themselves to be “furniture movers,” do a little bit of research first. See what other people have said about them and if they are able to handle those really heavy objects. This is something great that the Internet has given us these days. The ability to look up if a company can hold up to their own standards. People are now able to rate moving companies online, and if you’re searching at all for any ratings it’s likely that you’ll run into quite the extensive list.

If the Internet isn’t your thing, you can always call up the company that you have interest in. Speaking with an actual person gives more information than can be gleaned from the web, especially considering that reviews tend to be biased. So consider this. Any dummy can lift a couch, but it takes knowledge and skill to move one without damaging anything. Find that right company, and then let them help you. Don’t do it the other way around.
