Smart Tips for Getting Accurate Moving Estimates

One of the biggest decisions you will have to make upon deciding to move, regardless of if you are moving locally or across the country, is whether to hire a moving company to move your belongings or to move them yourself. While hiring a professional moving company can increase the cost of your move, there are many advantages to utilizing a professional moving company, as professional movers can help coordinate your move to make it less stressful and allow you to focus on your other responsibilities.

When searching for a moving company to hire, be sure to contact at least three moving companies to obtain quotes. Make sure the movers either perform an inspection in your home or do a video survey of your belongings before giving you an estimate – this will help prevent any surprise costs at moving time.

Depending on if the move is a local or a long-distance move, the estimate will most likely be calculated differently.

  • Local move: If you are moving locally, the moving cost will probably be a per hour rate. The rate will be based on various factors, including the number of movers that will be required as part of the moving crew, and the amount and size of the moving trucks that will be necessary.
  • Long-distance move: If you are making a long-distance move, the moving cost will be based on the weight of your belongings and the total distance for your move.

It is also important to find out if the moving estimate is a non-binding estimate, binding estimate, or binding not-to-exceed estimate.

  • Non-binding estimate: The final moving cost could end up being higher or lower than the estimate that was originally provided to you because the moving company does not have to be held to the estimate. At the time of delivery, if the final cost ends up being more than the estimate, your mover cannot require you to pay more than the estimate plus 10% of the total cost. Plus, the moving company can still bill you for additional costs after the move. For these reasons, non-binding estimates are not very common.
  • Binding estimate: The final moving cost cannot be higher than the original estimate. However, if the actual cost of the move is lower than the estimate, you will still pay the estimated amount.
  • Binding not-to-exceed estimate: This type of estimate is considered to be “consumer-friendly” and is also known as a “guaranteed price” or “price protection” estimate. The final moving cost will only be changed if the total cost is lower when the move is done. If the final moving cost is higher than the estimate, you do not pay any overages. If the moving cost is lower than the estimate, you will pay the exact cost of the move.

The 10 Most Expensive Places to Live

As a full service Boulder moving company, we can help you move anywhere — even to one of the most expensive cities in the world. While the cost of living in these cities is pretty high, there might be some reasons why you’d want know how to plan a more there, and we can help. What are the most expensive cities, you ask? Well, Forbes has just published an article titled ‘The Most Expensive Cities in the World,’ and here are some of the choices from that list.

  • Luanda, Angola
  • N’Djamena, Chad
  • Hong Kong, Hong Kong
  • Singapore, Singapore
  • Zurich, Switzerland
  • Geneva, Switzerland
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • Bern, Switzerland
  • Moscow, Russia
  • Shanghai, China

What’s the Deal With Switzerland?

Switzerland is listed three times above, but why is Switzerland so expensive? The cost of living is high in Switzerland, that’s for sure. However, most Swiss workers bring home around the equivalent of $5,000 per month, and that’s an average to low salary. So, really, Switzerland is just an expensive place to visit. If you’re planning to move to Switzerland, and you have a job lined up, you should be fine with the high rents and high costs of everyday things, since your salary should be in line with the overall cost of living in Switzerland.

The Most Expensive Places to Visit

Let’s say that you’re moving to Thornton, CO, but directly after your move you decide that you need to take a vacation (and why not?). If you are planning to travel on a budget, here are the places that you may not want to visit, or only visit for a day, since they are the most expensive towns and cities for travelers to check out.

  • Zurich, Switzerland (there’s Switzerland again!)
  • London, England
  • New York City, New York
  • Stockholm, Sweden
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Hong Kong

If you do plan to visit any of those cities, make sure to budget in advance — a beer at a pub could cost you more than $9 in some cities! If you’re moving to Colorado, you’ll have a much easier time affording basic things in this state that you would if you move to, say, Singapore or London. Still, it’s nice to visit some expensive cities, just make sure that you don’t stay too long, or you could wind up completely broke!

Most of the cities in this article are expensive due to high taxes, but the people that live in those cities tend to make comparative salaries. The only exceptions to this rule might be London and NYC where people often struggle to make ends meet. So, why do people live in expensive cities that they can’t really afford? It’s all about the city itself.

Some cities are just magical and full of history, and that’s hard to replace or ignore. In other cases, some cities offer job opportunities that can’t be found elsewhere, even if those job vacancies are scarce. Whatever the reason might be, once you’ve found a city that you love, it’s hard to live anywhere else — regardless of the cost!

Where to Live for $1500 Per Month

The website Mashable has just published an interesting report titled ‘What $1500 in Rent Gets You in 11 U.S. Cities.” As you might have suspected, this article shows you what the average apartment would look like across the U.S., and the results are really quite shocking.

If you’re planning on moving to Fort Collins, you can expect to get a good deal for your $1500 bucks, but that’s not the case if you’re moving to NYC!

Take a look at some of the cities that Mashable has researched.

– Washington D.C.: planning on moving to D.C.? You can expect to get a one bathroom studio for $1500 – yikes!

– San Francisco: San Francisco might be fun to visit, but this city isn’t a blast if you have to plunk down $1500 for a studio with one bathroom and a two-burner stove (in other words, a seriously small kitchen).

– Boston: you’re not going to get a lot more in Boston than you would in San Francisco, but at least you will get a one bedroom instead of a studio (that two-burner stove might still be a possibility, though).

– Missoula, Montana: if you are looking for a place to move to (don’t forget to call your long distance movers to help you out!), Missoula might be the place for you. Missoula residents can find four-bedroom apartments that span roughly 1800 square feet in that part of Montana – not bad at all.

– Omaha, Nebraska: Omaha is comparable to Missoula if you’re looking for space. Mashable estimates that you can get a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, house that’s approximately 1400 square feet in size for $1500.

– Miami, Florida: to live in the sun in Miami, be ready for a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, at around 715 square feet – a little bit better than San Francisco and New York City, but not spectacular.

Moving to Fort Collins

So, what can you expect to find in Fort Collins if you are moving to Fort Collins and you want to rent? For around $1200 in Fort Collins (according to the website Northern Colorado Rentals), you can find a two bedroom place with two bathrooms – that’s not bad at all! In fact, Fort Collins is an affordable place to live with a lot to offer couples, families, and individuals.

We also want to point out that our town is ideal if you plan to open a business. There’s a really strong sense of local business and loyalty to local businesses here in Fort Collins, and your business is welcome in our community. In short, don’t discount Colorado if you are thinking of moving long distance. While you can move to a place like Omaha, Colorado has a lot to offer where work, life, and the great outdoors is concerned.

How To Move a Hot Tub

A hot tub can be a great thing. After a long day at work, getting into your bathing suit and hitting that hot water just feels great. But, what do you do if you want to move your hot tub from its existing location? Hot tubs are heavy and bulky, but it can be done! Take a look at these tips.

1. Drain your hot tub first – you don’t want to move a full hot tub!
2. Detach all accessories from your hot tub including filters and heaters.
3. Clean the inside of the tub.
4. Recruit some friends to help you turn the hot tub on its side, and place wooden panels underneath each side of the tub, lifting up one side and then the other (there should be a gap between the two wooden slats).
5. Using a furniture dolly, slide the flat part of the dolly underneath the hot tub.
6. Secure the hot tub, and move it to the new location.

When you arrive at the new spot, you’ll want to carefully unload the hot tub the same way that you loaded it (one side at a time), and turn it on the base right side up. If you don’t have two pieces of wood to slide underneath the tub, you can simply use the dolly for transport purposes. Either way, it makes a lot of sense to tip the tub to one side, move it onto the dolly, and unload it the same way.

Once you’ve brought the tub to its new location, you will want to take the time to read through your user’s manual. The manual will tell you exactly how to refill and re-attach everything you need to use your hot tub once again. Before you set anything up, though, make sure that the tub is flat and secure – you don’t want it to tip when you get in! Keep in mind that a hot tub is heavy and often hard to move. This means that you’ll want to be sure you have enough people around helping you out, or you could wind up injured. If you aren’t sure how many people you will need or if you have enough people, a moving company might be a better option.

Getting a Hot Tub Moving Estimate

Most moving companies will assist you when it comes to moving something heavy like a hot tub from one location to another. In fact, hiring professional movers to help lift an item this heavy is a good idea (you don’t want to throw your back out!). To find out if a moving company can help you, simply call one that’s near you to get an estimate; explain the situation; note how big your hot tub is; and tell the person you speak to where you want to move the tub to.

Moving companies will base a hot tub moving estimate on how big the hot tub is, and how far you need to move it. If you want to move a hot tub to another part of your yard or home, that cost shouldn’t be too high. If you want to move a hot tub from a second-hand retailer to your house, the cost could be higher – but a moving company might also charge less than store moving options, so make sure to compare rates.

Hiring a moving company may cost more than recruiting some friends or moving a tub on your own, but there are definite benefits too. For one, you won’t risk injuring yourself. Another good reason is that hot tubs are expensive! A professional moving service can get the job done quickly, right, and without creating any property damage – well worth a look!

We’re happy to help you move anything that you need help with. Just give us a call at Exodus Moving and Storage, and we’ll be happy to provide you with an estimate. If you don’t have space for your hot tub, we can help you there too – we have storage options in both Denver and Fort Collins, and we’d be happy to store your hot tub for you. Call us today, and be careful if you decide to go it alone!

Moving Estimates: Deciphering the Mystery

It’s important that you shop around for, at least, three moving estimates before you choose a moving company. Knowing specific estimate terms will help you understand each estimate, so you can make a more informed decision. Below, we’ve listed some of the most common terms related to estimates that you’ll likely come across.

House and Question Mark GraphicTypes of Moves

An Intrastate Move: local moves are referred to as ‘intrastate moves’ in this industry. Typically, these moves are priced on a per-hour basis that includes the number of movers and the number of vehicles needed to move your items.

An Interstate Move: it sounds like ‘intrastate,’ but an ‘interstate’ move is quite different. These moves happen when your moving between states, and, thus, these moves are more expensive. Interstate moves are priced according to weight, and how far certain items have to be shipped.

An International Move: if you’re moving to another country, rates tend to be estimated based on your current country of residence, the amount of ocean transportation needed, and any customs or handling charges determined by each country. As such, international moves are far more expensive than inter or intra state moves.

Moving Estimate Terms

A Not-to-exceed Estimate: this is the type of estimate that you’ll want to get, if possible. Another way of phrasing this is a “guaranteed estimate.” When you get this kind of estimate, you will pay the lower of two prices: the real cost or the estimate. You’ll have to get this kind of estimate in writing before the move.

A Binding Estimate: when an estimate is binding, it means that you will have to pay the price listed. You won’t pay more for a binding estimate unless you make specific changes to the move.

A Non-Binding Estimate: this is an estimate in the true form of the term. A non-binding estimate means that the estimate in question is pure estimation, and cannot be considered binding in any way. Final costs are often written once a mover has had the change to weigh items to be moved.

An Important Note

Even if you have a really binding estimate, you love your mover, and you are ready to roll, make sure to look over the paperwork. Sometimes, movers simply miss smaller details (it happens!). So, double-check to be sure that everything you’ve discussed about your move is included in the estimate you receive. If you see something that’s missing, just call up your mover and ask about the missing portion. More often than not, a mover will simply adjust the contract per your original specifications. If you want to add anything to your moving contract, simply ask your mover to amend the contract. When you work with a trustworthy moving company, making changes to contracts isn’t a big deal at all.

Moving Estimates and Their Fluctuations

There is no real set standard for what companies use as a base for their moving estimates. Every company has different standards that they adhere to with strict policy, however the majority of the time these policies can conflict with other companies views on the matter. This means that every company is essentially going to give you a different quotes depending on who you go to. So how do you decide which companies going to be the best for you and the situation which you find yourself in? A good question, let’s look into it.

Question MarkPrice at the pump

One of the biggest expenditures that companies have these days is gasoline. Fuel is so crazy expensive because of the limitation of finding it, or so the gas companies say. Now, I’m not here to argue whether or not we are being overcharged for a fuel which is still pretty prevalent. What I am stating however is that it will be a big factor in whether or not your moving experience is expensive. Depending on how far you move, the fuel price dramatically increases. This could honestly be expected because you need gas in order to travel any sort of a distance. However, depending on which place you are moving to, the expenses could increase as you move. But you might ask, how?

Distance is alive and well

Well, let’s say that you are moving to California from Colorado and you know that in Colorado the gas prices are approximately 3 dollars a gallon. In California you could expect the price to rise at least a dollar a gallon, so along the way your price is going to increase along the curve which represents fuel prices. Anybody who has ever driven a vehicle knows that one dollar a gallon can make a massive difference in even a single tank of gas. So, just be prepared when you have someone help you move to expect fuel prices to rise as you move to your new location. Not letting it surprise you is the first step to accepting that it’s something that is going to happen whether you like it or not.

The heavier they are..

Another big factor in whether or not your expenditures are increased or decreased is the amount of things that you are moving. Full-service moving company quotes need to gauge about how many trips they will need to make, or the size of vehicle that is needed in order to make a single trip.  You could make a single trip with an average sized home provided that you rented out a large enough truck, however you must realize that gets pretty expensive pretty quickly. Something that you could definitely do to help yourself out is to drive alongside of them and take as many things as you can in your own vehicles, or try to get things there ahead of time that you know that you can move. I know if you are moving long distance this may not be the most feasible option, but it is one way of reducing your costs.

Graffiti Dollar SignHome is where the wallet can afford

Another thing to keep in mind is that moving is expensive no matter what you do. Moving in general is not something that people do on a daily basis and as such requires a lot more effort than you would expect. Just make sure you aren’t surprised by the amount of expenditures that go into moving after you have already purchased the house, or at least put down a down payment. There is a reason people tend to stay in the same places, or at least relatively close to where they have their first home. It’s because unless they are being sponsored by a company to move out to a new location, those expenditures can become increasingly problematic.

Enjoyment

All of this may sound rather dark and gloomy, but don’t let it get you down. Moving is an exciting adventure that allows you to experience new things that you would not have before. You should embrace it and enjoy it for what it is rather than fear the expenditures which you will be undertaking. Those are going to happen whether you like it or not, so focus on the good and try to enjoy the experience. If you don’t, you’ll find that you don’t like the area you move too much more frequently than the place you used to live in. So go out there, explore, and show the world that you are afraid to see new things and risk it all in doing so.

Beware of Suspiciously Low Moving Estimates

I think that the general consensus is that everybody likes to save money. Money is used to purchase things, and if you spend too much of it on an individual object, then you don’t have enough to go around. However, there is such a thing unfortunately in the moving industry, as well as every other industry for that matter, as too low of a quote. I know, it may seem a little bit hard to grasp, but if someone gives you a quote that is ridiculously low especially for the distance that you will need to be traveling, then it might be a scam and you should take heed of that feeling.

Moving estimates are something that are usually pretty rock-solid because they have to take into account the distance they need to travel, the gaskets going to be used, and the time that is going to be spent by the people who are helping you move. It’s really pretty easy to figure out exactly how much money you are going to be spending to help an individual customer move. However, some fake businesses can be set up and set themselves at ridiculously low prices that would put them in the red simply to get a hold of your stuff. Now, don’t get me wrong. Sales do happen and prices fluctuate. Sometimes you’ll find a really good price for moving that seems to be almost borderline in the red. Businesses can do this to try to generate business and it’s not exactly a rare occurrence. However, if you see something that is blatantly too low for what you think standard price would be for even the fuel to get you to your next home, look elsewhere. They will probably try anything to get your attention but you just need to walk away.

Unfortunately scams are everywhere. There seems to be an innate desire within some people to try to steal as much as they can from other individuals without getting caught. Maybe it’s a thrill issue, or maybe it’s something to do with something that happened in their childhood. I’m not going to get off Freudian on you here, but there is something wrong with the individuals who create these sorts of programs. Sometimes it’s possible to tell if these people are who they say they are when you meet them in person. A simple tech, or a slip of the tongue could give enough away to put you on edge. If you really don’t feel confident that accompanies there to help you, don’t hire them simple as that. It’s much better to be safe than sorry.

Getting a Free Moving Estimate is as Easy as Eating Pie

If there’s one thing that you want to compare with other companies, it’s moving estimates. Moving can be one of the most expensive endeavors that you can encounter in your life, especially if this move takes you across the country. It’s highly recommended that instead of going with the first company that you come across, whether that is us or not, that you look around and see what other people have to offer. You can always ask if the company that you desire to have move you can price match with another company has offered. It’s not always going to work, but it’s always worth a shot. Not every moving company is going to have the ability to price match especially if they’re located in different places around the globe. If you need to move let’s say from New York to Los Angeles, it’s going to cost considerably more if you hire a company that’s located in Ohio for example. Not that you would really want to do that, but still.

Getting a free quote is something that you should definitely take into consideration as well. Some people don’t offer their quotes for free and we think this is a severely outdated method. They should not cost you money to figure out if you want to spend money with a certain company. Get our free quote, and then go compare us with other companies that you come across. Not only is this the wise business decision, but it allows you to get a better idea of what your expenditures are going to be. You will always go with the cheaper option, that’s just the way things are. However, before you decide that the cheapest option you’ve been able to find out there is the company you want, to make sure that they offer the services that you want as well.

Services are an extraordinarily important part of moving. If you hire a company who is cheap, but doesn’t offer the services that you’re going to need, than what was the point of the whole endeavor? Instead, do as we discussed above and see if the company that you know has all the services you want will price match what you found. You’ll keep it cheap as well as getting everything that you desired.

Making Sure Your Moving Estimates Come Out Correct

It’s important to be well informed when it comes to trusting any company on a moving estimate. It’s not likely that they’re going to try to pull the wool over your eyes, but just in case it’s better to be safe than sorry. Not every company is as reputable as us. Some moving companies have been known to charge people appalling amounts of money for something that shouldn’t have cost very much. This should not put a dark frame on the industry though. Many people in this industry, like us, are just trying to make a living by helping you move places.

calculatorIt’s important for you however to realize that being it a savvy consumer is the best kind of consumer. Having the knowledge underneath you and the street smarts to realize that a moving companies quote maybe a little bit high is an extremely handy skill to have. Really it all comes down to basic mathematics. If you have the ability to add and subtract, you can figure out a quote. Plus, all you have to do is do a little bit of research into other companies in the area and find out what they are charging. If their estimates are considerably lower than what you have, then you may want to talk to the company you have hired.

There is one way to avoid this whole thing though. Hire someone who is as reputable as us. Better yet, hire us. We will give you an extremely fair quote that you are more than welcome to talk with us about. We like to know that the people we are working for our very intelligent. We like to discuss the sort of things with you and ensure that you are as happy as we are. Granted, everybody would be happy if everything was free, but there would be no such thing as business. So, don’t expect a free move when you get a quote from anyone, but at least make sure it’s reasonable. Otherwise you could end up paying a lot more money by just not being careful enough to make sure that your quote is acceptable.

Colorado Movers with All the Right Moves: How to Select a Moving Company

Today our Colorado movers took to the social media world to ask, “Have you ever selected a mover based on how high they ranked in an internet search?” It’s important to know that a mover should not always be selected based off of how high or low they fall on Google or Bing. If you want quality moving services (like Exodus) you’re going to have to do a little bit of research.
Make sure you avoid any movers that have been blacklisted as scams. These tend to pop up as advertisements on search engine result pages and could end up costing you way more than a quality mover in the end.
Ask for referrals. This will ensure that you are working with Colorado movers who have been rated as excellent by past clients. Make sure you follow up on references as well, in the end, it’ll be worth it.
Ask about the employees working for the company. Some moving companies will hire temporary workers instead of keeping a trained and excellent staff of Colorado movers year-round. If this is the case, inquire about performance, drug testing and background checks. These people will be in your home and carrying items that could be irreplaceable to you. Make sure they are quality employees.
Be wary of hiring Colorado movers that have prices listed as “too good to be true.” Usually, they are. These movers have a reputation for holding your items on their trucks until you pay any “additional fees” that come with your move.
Use your best judgment. If a company has no physical address, doesn’t talk about their employees or seems just a bit dodgy in any aspect, avoid them at all costs. At Exodus, we put it all out on the table, answer any of your questions and even assign an employee who will oversee the entire move and act as your liaison with the company.
Once you’ve found a Colorado mover that you are totally obsessed with (like all our clients are with us), make sure you take a few extra precautions by insuring the items you’re moving and being present on moving day just to oversee the whole operation. If you put in this tiny amount of work, your moving day will be a piece of cake!
