Tips to Stay Organized During Your Move

Everyone dreads moving. While a new home is always exciting, the act of getting your belongings into that new home is far from it. If you’ve got a big family, it’s even more challenging. Is there really a way to stay organized to save a little sanity in the chaos that is packing and moving?

Between getting rid of things you don’t need, packing boxes for your Colorado moving company in an orderly fashion if you aren’t having them pack them for you, and then making sure everything ends up where it needs to when it’s unloaded, it can seem overwhelming. Here are some tips to make sure that everything is as painless as possible for your big move.

  • If you aren’t relying on your moving company to pack the boxes when moving to Fort Collins, you’ll want to make sure you purchase new boxes of the highest quality. They’ll hold up better throughout the process, and seal completely rather than the old banana boxes from the grocery store. (They can make your belongings smell of bananas!) What’s more, using high quality, uniform size boxes ensure that the moving company can more efficiently pack the truck up.
  • Be sure the boxes are sealed as completely as possible. Don’t use cheap masking tape to do the job – splurge on high quality packing tape. You don’t want a box to somehow open because the tape didn’t do its job, only to find your belongings scattered all over the inside of the moving truck, or worse, on the ground outside.
  • Label all boxes with the room they should be going to and a number. This is the easiest way to not only unload the truck, but to unpack. Keep an inventory of what is in each box according to its number, so that you know whether that’s a box of pots and pans or servingware. This will help you unpack in record time. This inventory is also helpful for insurance purposes – if a box comes up missing, you know exactly what was inside.
  • Make lists upon lists upon lists. Start with a list of things you need for moving day, and progress to a list of services you need to transfer over to the new house, like electric and internet. If you can’t transfer a service, determine the date you’ll want them to disconnect service at your old home, along with the company to contact and when to call them to initiate service at your new home.
  • Include a list of companies to contact with your new address, and be sure to provide the mail forwarding card to your post office so anything you forget is still sent to you. This is a good time to clean up your catalog subscription list – determine which catalogs you can’t live without and contact them with your new address, and do nothing for those you don’t wish to receive anymore.
  • Take breaks whenever you feel yourself starting to get stressed or sore. When you feel this way, you won’t pack as efficiently.
  • Crank up your favorite playlist. If you’re more efficient when you’re relaxed, pop on some classical music to create a relaxed atmosphere. Most people respond positively to upbeat music, working faster and feeling more motivated. Turn to songs that you would work out to, songs that make you want to move.

Moving doesn’t have to be a horrible experience. It is what you make of it – if you create an enjoyable environment and don’t sweat the small stuff, you’ll make it through no problem! Organization is key. If you need a bit of guidance, and think that hiring a moving company to do most of the work for you is your best bet, call us today for a free moving quote.
