“Project Sanctuary is where families reconnect.”
Where there is great need comes great responsibility. At Exodus, we are thankful for our freedom and our success and feel that it is important to give back. We actively support our United States military with our time and effort and resources because we wish to show our gratitude for their sacrifice.
Project Sanctuary is an organization that was established in 2007 to address a very big need within the military community. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, 21 military veterans commit suicide each week. Armed with these statistics and so many others, Project Sanctuary works with whole families to begin the healing process and to promote new, positive memories to improve quality of life.
The following is from an interview we recently did with Heather Ehle about Project Sanctuary and partnership with Exodus Moving and Storage.
How Does Project Sanctuary Reconnect Families?
Project Sanctuary is the first organization to offer services for the whole family that gives them the time they need to really heal. Many other workshops exist for a couple days at a time. But we have found that after several months or even years of missing a loved one, it requires more than just a few hours to reconnect. Families need time to address the many issues and hurts that have come as a result of their separation. So we take 5-10 families to a YMCA facility in the Rockies for 6 day retreats. We create recreational activities designed to help each family member to overcome emotional obstacles. We call this “diversion therapy”, creating new life affirming memories to replace natural feelings of fear and abandonment. In addition to hiking, fishing and skiing together, we also offer healthy marriage classes and financial education seminars. We balance the practical and the fun which his gives the whole family time to heal together. War is a very serious thing but you would be amazed at how much bonding can be done around a camp fire over smores.
How does Exodus help Project Sanctuary?
Because we are committed to each family that we serve for two years of follow up, we do more than just provide retreats. We become a consistent support for their most important needs. Unable to do this alone, we require many layers of support in the community so that we can help these military families in their most desperate moments. We need other businesses to do what they do best so that we can do what we do best. I first met Joel through a community Veterans Alliance. Soon after, a Gold Star family contacted us. With the convergence of their sons recent death in the line of duty and the mothers current health problems, this family was losing their house. Having nowhere else to turn, they called us when they had only two days to move. I called Joel and explained the situation. And with very few questions asked, Exodus came to the rescue, donating time, manpower and most of all sanity to a very difficult situation for these people. We greatly appreciate Exodus’ community spirit. Together we are able to pick up the heavy load when our military families cant.
What can people do to support Project Sanctuary?
Just to be absolutely clear, Project Sanctuary is not “pro war”, we are pro family. The political aspects of the issue are not our angle. As a nation, I think we have learned from Vietnam. We need regular people to get involved by sharing their time, money and love. I just spent this morning writing grants and I’m proud that People Magazine is about to do a full feature about Project Sanctuary. Most of all we are trying to get the word out there. The more opportunities we have to share what these families are going through, really going through, the more support we are bound to receive from those who want to say that you.

“When a serviceperson is deployed, a family goes to war.”
Many people claim to support our military. But at Exodus, we feel that in spite of the various ideologies attached to the politics of war, the activity of supporting our troops is a separate pursuit. Leaving homes and family is par for the course for these young individuals. And while many people talk about “giving back to those who give so much,” at Exodus, we support those who are putting this talk into action.
Project Sanctuary is an organization we are proud to support because of their unique understanding of the plight of military personnel and their families. They understand the intricacies of this life changing situation. This organization seeks to address the deep relational ramifications of leaving your loved ones for long periods of time. Not only do these young men and women risk their lives, but they often return to families in financial and emotional stress, the kind of which is often unaddressed by other military support avenues. Project Sanctuary specializes in recreational therapy in the form of retreats that help to heal the wounds of war.
The following is from an interview we recently did with Heather Ehle about Project Sanctuary and partnership with Exodus Moving and Storage.
What do you do with Project Sanctuary?
My name is Heather and I am the Founder of Project Sanctuary. I was a registered nurse during the first gulf war. Experiencing many things during this time, I was overwhelmed with the reality that there simply wasn’t enough being done for the families of military. These people are away from their loved ones for so long, when they return, things have always changed. I began to do research and found that neglect and abuse reports triple during times of deployment. It was obvious to me that there was an incredible gap between what was being offered and what was needed and this chasm was wide indeed for these wives, husbands and children. I built Project Sanctuary to bridge this gap and based the program model on this basic premise: I asked them what they needed. Project Sanctuary is completely designed around the personal struggles and adjustments military families have to make and therefore it’s an evolving program based on the needs of those it serves. Currently we have two main groups: Blue Star- for those who currently have a family member in the field and Gold Star- for those who have lost a family member in the line of duty.
What the main goal of Project Sanctuary?
At Project Sanctuary we help military families to reconnect with each other. During times of deployment, families are emotionally and financially stressed often to the point of breaking. With few exceptions, they have a hard time being a part of a community in such a state and ironically, it’s what they need the most. Civilians don’t often understand just how much is being missed while a service person is away. The average army deployment is 14 months. Think about it. That means that the family back home has been without their loved one for every holiday and birthday in that calendar year. If you are in the army and you have had a couple of deployments and you have an 8 year old, you have missed most of their life. So many firsts are missed. First steps, first words, first school dances. And it’s even worse in the case of dual families who have both mother and father in the armed forces. Mom and Dad take turns being away. As you can imagine, this takes a very logical toll on everyone and brings new meaning to the word sacrifice.

What is Pianos about Town?
Established in 2010, Pianos about Town was born of the energies and ideas of the City of Fort Collins, the Downtown Development Authority and the Bohemian Foundation. The idea was simple: old pianos would be placed at random throughout the city. Local artists would be invited to publically paint their own designs and styles of art on each piano. The pianos would then be moved repeatedly throughout the city, arriving in various public squares and open air spaces. Local musicians as well as average residents would then have access to them as they go about their day. The idea being that this “happening” would encourage spontaneity, creativity and a positive community environment.
The Bohemian Foundation
In 2001, Pat Stryker founded the Bohemian Foundation with one main goal: making the world a better place. Placing infinite value on the worth of the individual human spirit and its potential for growth, creativity and innovation, this organization now works with other community organizations to encourage these core values. The foundation focuses on music as a primary avenue for facilitating personal expression, believing that it will ultimately foster society’s liberation from many of the social plagues of our modern age.
Downtown Development Authority
The DDA exists to help join together citizens, businesses and government in an effort to stimulate growth. It serves to provide guidance both organizationally and financially to evolving projects in downtown areas.
City of Fort Collins “Art in Public Places” Program
Established in 1995, the Art in Public Places Program is an initiative created by the City of Fort Collins. This program believes that quality of life is directly affected by the presence of art. It works with local artists to encourage and enhance opportunities for public art maintenance and exhibition throughout Fort Collins.
Consistent involvement is one of the main things that makes Exodus Moving and Storage a pillar in our community. We put our money, our time and our effort where our mouth is when it comes to promoting local business and creating a prosperous environment to improve the quality of life in the areas in which we live and serve. But one of the most important priorities when it comes to building a positive future in our neighborhoods, is the environment. We try harder than any other moving and storage company to promote green energy practices throughout our day to day operations, providing an example for our employees, our customers and our communities as a whole.
One of the ways we are involved in our community in Fort Collins is through an organization call Trees, Water & People. Every time we complete a move, we give back to the environment by planting a tree. By utilizing their “plant a tree” program, we are able to plant an average of about 2000 trees per year.
What is Trees, Water & People?
A registered 501c3 nonprofit organization, Trees, Water & People is an organization that was created in 1998 to play an active role in the conservation and management of the natural resources within communities. With a focus on the issues of climate change, clean water and the promotion of sustainability, Trees, Water & People helps people to not only protect the resources they have around them but to reach out to various parts of the globe that need help.
Created by Stuart Conway and Richard Fox, this important group of conservationalists has created a myriad of both local programs in Fort Collins Colorado and beyond, including Reforestation Programs & Tribal Lands Renewable Energy Programs. Much of the work done by Trees, Water & People is focused in both North and South America and has earned both national and international recognition and awards for educational and conservation efforts.
Green Environment Programs for Businesses
Trees, Water & People is committed to empowering local businesses to reduce their waste and increase environmentally friendly standards in the workplace. On average, ten trees are cut down for every one tree that is replanted worldwide. In an effort to offset our carbon emissions, Exodus is proud to partner with Trees, Water & People in global reforestation by participating in their tree planting program.

Fort Collins Board of Realtors
The Board of Realtors in Fort Collins is a membership organization that focuses on the growth of Fort Collins as it centers around the real estate market. Addressing housing issues of all kinds such as zoning and compliance issues, the FCBR is a interactive resource for its members and surrounding community. Including a host of committees offering various events, government resources and educational programs, the Fort Collins Board of Realtors is overseen by a unique entity called a Sustainability Committee and remains a pioneer in its work to create ecologically friendly business practices.
Loveland Berthoud Association of Realtors
The main mission of the Loveland Berthoud Association of Realtors is to help develop and promote programs that facilitate the buying and selling of property in Loveland Colorado. They believe that through education and support, it is possible to increase the integrity and skill level of these transactions which will ultimately create a positive effect in the community. Working to provide training programs and networking opportunities for all those involved in the housing market, the LBAR is a professional association dedicated to upholding the highest standards of excellence in the real estate sector.
North Metro Denver Realtor Association
The North Denver Realtor Association is a membership organization serving real estate professionals working in the North Denver Metro area. Also known as the NMDRA, this collective focuses on promoting the personal growth of those involved, seeking to improve not only business standards but the economic climate, community and overall quality of life in the areas served. In an effort to improve opportunities and services, this group has many affiliates within its local community.
2010 is going to be a big year for the city of Fort Collins. This January, the City Council work session worked to implement new Green building standards. The Fort Collins Board of Realtors happens to be the driving force behind it all. The FCBR should be recognized for being among the first in the country and the only Realtor association in the State of Colorado, to have a sustainability committee. Yes, you read it right, a new sustainability committee.
Fort Collins as a community, seems to be consistently assessing the best ways to guarantee a sustainable future, and this happens to be one of the best ideas thus far. FCBR’s sustainability committee focuses on several ways to enhance our community’s efforts to reduce energy usage and provide Green resources that will educate the public.
The committee already has quite a few projects underway, including formulating criteria for new FCBR awards. In doing so, the FCBR hopes to launch criteria for Green Office of the year and Green Realtor of the year awards.
They also hope to leverage a few partnerships to have access for improvements so they can provide the community with new Green tools that will be helpful while assisting buyers and sellers.
There’s no doubt that Fort Collins is a community that prides itself on thinking in a sustainable way. This just goes to show that people and companies in this town are taking these ideas seriously. Thanks Fort Collins Board of Realtors for not only talking the talk but also walking the walk.
