Take advantage of various reference materials such as the US Census Bureau Statistical Abstract by State in order to get the demographic details about your potentially new location. It can also be a good idea to subscribe to a few local papers for a couple of months before making the move. This will give you an idea not only about what is happening in the area but how the people in the area interpret these current events. Invaluable cultural insights can be surmised from reading local publications and can give you a better idea if this city is the best match for your business.
Create a Timeline
Sit down with those who are most strategically involved in the relocation planning and make a preliminary list of what needs to be done. Be Clear About WHAT
A good place to begin, once you have decided exactly why you want to move, is to make a list containing everything you will need for your new office. Again, being as detailed as possible with your location specifications is the key to clarity and ultimately success. Write down everything that is a priority such as the size you need the office to be, the physical placement and in what type of neighborhood, along with what kind of facilities and equipment you will require. In this case your reasons for the move become very important: If your main reason for moving is to find more qualified employees, it’s important not to get caught up in a wonderfully inexpensive new lease in an area where the demographics do not support such a specified labor force. Be clear with yourself about what is needed as opposed to wanted and create your list accordingly. This will ensure that there is less ambiguity and confusion when it comes time to make the most important decisions.
When creating a checklist for a move, one of the most often forgotten items is the “open me first” box. And while this may seem like a concept of minimal importance, it can potentially make or break your first 48 hours in your new home. There are several different moving guides and relocation tips out there. Each one has a different view on what is important to include in this “box”. There is also some dispute on whether or not you should create an “open me first” box for each room of your home. While this can be a good idea, we feel that for the sake of ease and in an effort to not have to locate all of these boxes before nodding off to sleep, we would like to suggest creating one location that will have everything you need to be comfortable.
Use a Backpack, Suit Case or Duffel Bag
Make sure that this “open me first” box doesn’t look like everything else. It is also helpful to make sure that it doesn’t travel with everything else. If possible, transport this group of things with you in your personal vehicle so that you know where it is at all times. Keeping it in the trunk of your car is recommended until the movers have left and the house has “settled down”. This way you can avoid losing track of it in times of high traffic.
Pack for 2 days
Make sure to include a change of clothes for tomorrow and the next day. This allows for some extra time to get to your unpacking as well as an additional outfit to change into in case something gets spilled on or becomes sweaty from heavy lifting. Don’t forget PJ’s and sheets for your bed as there is literally nothing worse than finally wanting to sleep and having to search for linens. It is important to include all of your toiletries in travel sizes but especially remember to pack a toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. A travel candle and lighter can be a nice touch to relax you on your first night in your new home.
Vital Forgotten Items
While this may seem obvious, toilet paper is a very important thing to make sure to have in your home throughout the moving process. Everyone involved will benefit from this item arriving first in the bathroom. Expect a long day of talking and coordinating during your move. Don’t forget to pack your cell phone charger and a pen and paper in that first box. It’s also important to make sure to bring soap, a shower curtain and a towel so that at the end of a hard day, you can easily get clean.
Get a copy of the “cube sheet” from your estimator or mover. This is a full listing of all the things in your home that are to be moved along with the estimated cubic size of each item. The cube sheet in an invaluable tool when it comes to creating accurate moving estimates. Having a copy of this is an easy way to make sure that nothing important is being left out and nothing additional is being counted.
There are a lot of administrative items to take care of when you move. Remember to cancel your utilities, change your address with the post office, and contact your friends, family, work, creditors, insurance providers, along with any subscriptions about your change of location. We suggest setting these changes up at least 3 weeks before your move date in order to insure that no important notifications are misplaced and no additional fees are charged.
