Exodus Moving Tips: How to Live With Friends
Graduation is approaching quickly. More often than not, graduating from college means getting a permanent job, and probably some roommates – especially if you plan on living in a busy and expensive city. Living with friends can be a lot of fun, but setting some serious ground rules is vital to a long lasting friendship (and rent being paid on time!). Take it from us, a full-service moving company; you’ll want to show each of your roommates the following tips.
1. Make sure that rent is in before the end of the month. Everyone should agree to a specific date each month when rent will be collected. This date should be in advance of the actual due date set forth by your landlord. This way, you won’t be scrambling to gather rent at the last minute.
2. Make a chore chart. Who’s going to take out the garbage, and who’s going to make dinner? Things will be a lot simpler if you create a chore chart that everyone agrees to.
3. Create time rules. Make sure that nobody will be knocking on your house door at midnight, or find some other time that works for everyone. Setting some visitor guidelines is a good idea.
4. Decide how you will split other bills. In addition to rent, there are lots of other bills to think about including electricity, air or heat, grocery bills, and anything else that is part of the overall home expenditure.
5. Don’t eat each other’s food! It can be tempting just to grab your roommate’s yogurts when you’re out of food, but don’t do it! Set up some kind of policy in-home that prevents people from taking food that wasn’t purchased for by that person.
6. Have fun! With work, stress, and other duties, it can be hard to remember to have fun with your friends, but isn’t that the point of living with your friends? Try to remember to spend some time with your buddies, and don’t let work get in the way of having lots of fun.
Making It All Work
Some of the best memories you’ll have will come from your time spent living with friends. The trick is to make sure that all of the rules are laid out and agreed on before you start to live together. This way, there won’t be any disputing a rule that everyone has agreed to, and it will simply make your life a lot easier. The hardest part is, actually, creating rules that everyone does agree to. Once that’s done, the only other thing that you’ll have to do as a group is move into your new home!
