Is CrossFit For You?
If you’re moving long distance, you’ll probably have to start all over, and that means finding a new gym. But before you sign up for that gym down the street, think about starting something new. In a new town, you can try anything, and you might even find that a new activity is exciting and just what you were looking for. This might lead you to wondering about CrossFit, and wondering if a CrossFit gym is for you. Here’s how to find out.
CrossFit has largely become a popular sport due to backing by major companies like Reebok, and the surfacing of many different obstacle course races that tend to be populated by CrossFit members. Those that started the movement claim that it’s for anyone and everyone, but the truth is that some people might not love CrossFit, and others could find it very intimidating.
So, here’s how to figure out if you will love or hate this sport.
Beginner Weight Lifters
With all of those people lifting large weights, CrossFit can be very intimidating for first-time weight lifters. In fact, you might not get anything out of the program if you can’t hold a barbell above your head. If you can’t do a push up or lift anything (and have never tried), this is probably not the best place for you. You just might find a “box” that is very tolerant when it comes to beginners, though this is hard to do.
A Team Sport
CrossFitters tend to do everything together, and that includes hanging out together after work. If you really hate team efforts, this isn’t for you. On the flip side, if you love support and want to work with a community (great if you are moving long distance), CrossFit might just be what you want to do. The best advice is to try it out, see how cliquey the group is, and think about whether or not you can stand to be around those people all the time.
A Former Athlete
A lot of former athletes love CrossFit because it is both competitive and a group sport all rolled into one. If you are a former athlete of any kind, you may love the challenges that CrossFit includes. Plus, as a former athlete you may have some skills (jumping, swinging, lighting hard things, endurance) that other people may not have, so this will help you when it comes to competitions.
Take it from a girl that broke her ankle doing CrossFit – pick a CrossFit box that comes with really good and patient instructors. Also, make sure the people teaching you how to jump on a really high box know what they are doing. There is some danger that comes with any extreme sport, so keep this in mind at all times. Find out how long the people have been teaching, and don’t push yourself if you know that your body is exhausted – sometimes, pain is not gain.

Read reviews of the various CrossFit gyms in your area, and make sure to check out a few before you sign up for one. You’ll see that most are quite different!
